how do I share internet between XP and Vista?

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:33 pm

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... hoc.mspx#2
I followed instructions on MS website and I have created Ad-hoc connection on my T60 running Windows XP. Then I tried connecting to this network using X300 running Vista. It asked me for the usual 13 letter passcode and then says "Successfully connected to .... " but the internet is not working on my X300. The skype is not connecting and IE sas "IE cannot display the webpage." What am I doing wrong???

What information do you get if you run "diagnose and repair" (found in network and sharing center) on the vista machine?

I am not sure, since I actually haven't done this, but don't all the computers need to belong to the same workgroup (i.e., have the same workgroup name)? You set this from System in Control Panel, or from My Computer IIRC.

I took "sharing internet" literally. Why not use an inexpensive router? That makes life so much easier. Did I miss something? ... JDH

yeah i forgot to mention that I am in Dominica and last time I went to Best Buys in this place it didn't even have an internet cable. I am going to the states for the Christmas break but meanwhile I'd like to have internet on both of my computers.

It looks to me like that article leaves out the step of Internet Connection Sharing. On the computer that has the wired connection to the modem, on the Internet Connection Properties Advanced tab, you have to check the box(s) in "Internet Connection Sharing".

ok i double and triple checked it again. checking the "enable internet connection sharing" box disables my internet connection. unchecking the box brings it back to life. really why is this happening???

Make sure you enable internet connection sharing on the correct adapter. Maybe the following article will help.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp

Or this one. Notiice the following:
When you enable ICS, your local area network (LAN) connection gets a new static IP address and configuration, so you'll need to reestablish any TCP/IP connections between your host computer and the other network computers.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Window ... 71033.mspx

Once you get it set up where you think it should work, but it doesn't, try rebooting everything. Reboot the host computer first, then the client computer(s).
