RRUbackups & rapid restore

#1 Post by hYdrociTy » Tue Oct 06, 2009 3:10 am

I've got a t43p with a factory set of IBM software, including the preloaded stuff. I recently restored to factory settings for a clean install of windows xp from the IBM partition.

After all the windows updates and now at sp3 I installed a few applications and used for a week and everything is fine and dandy.

I look at the hard drive usage and I've got 21gb free out of 60gb. I know it's 55GB actual minus 5 for the ibm factory load so a 60GB drive should have ~51gb free right? So I used 30gb up.

So now here is the real question. I have 21gb left, and I want to know how to keep the RRUbackup from doing anything. Does the RRU make backups every time I install stuff? Does the size of the folder increase? I read threads where people say the folder will grow after time. According to the Access IBM i have the scheduler off and I never initiated any activity.

I dont know how to check if there are any backups there already after all this usage. If there are, are they safe to delete? I have no need to back up. Basically I want the ability to delete the backups if there are any yet not accidentally delete the "Real" IBM stuff which is that ~5gb of windows and drivers etc.

I heard of the command rapid restore tools or something but I can't seem to find where to download or how to use it.

So I guess there's two entities here

The ~5gb on a separate partition which is the "Factory Load" <---dont want to touch even though others might want deleted
and
The ? amount of stuff inside the local disk under C:\RRUbackups\ which is hidden from me which might grow. <----this is what I want removed

Thanks for bearing with all this, I just wanted to make absolutely clear what I was aiming for.

What version of R&R do you have installed? If you have the old IBM version then upgrade it to ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery.

When you start a recent version you will see the simplified menu. At the bottom left-hand corner of the simplified menu there is an option to 'Launch Advanced Resue & Recovery'. Take this option and you can view all backups. On the toolbar of the advanced version is an option called 'Advanced' where you will find lots more.

Also, the content of Help section is actually very helpful.

I hope this helps.

It says

IBM Rescue & Recovery 2.0 (2.04.182)

I was hesitant to look for upgrades because that would mean there might be dependencies that requre updating all the other thinkpad software to the newest version. I think the T43 is mature enough that those new Lenovo sets of software probably won't add anything as they just include compatibility for new machines..
