How to set Hibernate as standard instead of Shutdown?

#1 Post by T42p » Wed Feb 16, 2005 9:45 pm

I would like to always use hibernate instead of shutdown. But there is no button for hibernation when I select Windows -> Shutdown, only restart, shutdown and standby. Is it possible to use the shutdown button for hibernation (by changing the registry or something else?) Right now I have remapped the Access IBM Button to Hibernation, but I would prefer to be able to use Windows for shutdown as my machine sometimes is in a dock with the lid closed (=> no access to Access IBM Button).

I know that tablet pcs have an option to use hibernation instead of shutdown, so this must be possible somehow.

Thanks

Ok, thanks for your answers. I already knew about the Fn+F12, the Shift at Shutdown was new to me.

But I still would prefer to have this option always available or better as standard for shutdown when I go the way via the Start-Menu.

Like when I press start, there are two options. "Turn off computer" and "Log off". I would like to either replace Log off with Hibernate or add an additional button. If I could make the Hibernate always visible in the Shutdown Menu (like when pressing Shift) that would also be acceptable.

Any other ideas?

I'm puzzled why you're going through the Start menu at all when you can just press Fn + F12 to hibernate, shut the lid and go, but, then, people do the strangest things.

Well, hard to explain. I also have set the Access IBM Button to Hibernation, but I have to admit that I sometimes forget and shut down normally. That's what I want to prevent

I don't know about making Shutdown function as Hibernate but another way to Hibernate is to simply close the lid, the setup is in IBM's Battery MaxiMizer Wizard.

Right clic on the desktop, Prperites > Screensaver > Power > Advanced >

Under "Power buttons". select "Hibernate" in the drop down list under "when I press the power button on my computer"

OK ur way out....

Ok, I don't want to use hibernation when closing the lid as I use the machine in a dock sometimes. The Powerbutton is a slightly better solution, but still not 100% what I want.

Anywaz, thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hi there,

I recently put a new HD in my Thinkpad and the hibernate option on the start menu wasn't there until I went into the Power/Hibernation settings for windows.

There is a check-box to "Enable Hibernation" - Don't know if this is what you mean.

It's enabled and it works. I just want to enter it using the normal shutdown procedure without having to press shift every time. Is that really soooooo difficult to make this work? :?:

It does work! But you want to modify the action of Windows Shutdown button, I don't believe that's possible.

You could place a Hibernate button in the Start Menu, but soooooo sorry, you're on your own when it comes to remembering to use it.

You must all think I'm a little stupid..... 8)

I just imagined how neat it would be to have a separate button for hibernation.
When I read that this option exists in Windows XP for Tablet PCs, I thought it wouldn't be so difficult to realize that.
Sorry about bothering you so long, it's not that I die when I can't have it. It would just have been soooooooo neat! 8)

That's exactly what I'm talking about above, a separate button.

P.S. I don't think you're stupid at all.

I think there's a misunderstanding. I already remapped the Powerbutton and Access IBM to Hibernation. What I want is an (always visible, not only when pressing shift) Hibernation button to click in the Windows Shutdown Menu.

Do you mean in the window that pops up after clicking Start+Turn Off Computer"? The window that pops open says "Turn off computer" at the top.

If it is, no, sorry, I don't know how to add a button there, in fact, I don't think it's possible.

But you could add a button to do so directly below "Run" in the right side of the Start Menu.

That's the menu I meant. If the welcome screen is disabled, there's a dropdown list that has hibernate in it. It would just be a matter of changing the standard selection.

But a button below "Run" would also be not too bad. How do I do that? I already wondered how they got the Access IBM Button there...... :?:

Well, I guess it is possible, have a look at this article: When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;893056

If you still want a button, here's how:

To create the shortcut: right-click the desktop, select New+Shortcut, in the location box type:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate

click Next, give it a name and click Finish. Save the shortcut permanently anywhere on your HDD.

To place it in the Start Menu: drag and drop the shortcut onto the Start Button.

To place it below "Run" in the Start Menu, go to my homepage and see Tweaks+Cosmetics+Start Menu, Add an item below 'Run'.

Ok, I have to bring this up again. After lots of research I found an aricle in the Microsoft Knowledge Base that describes how to do just what I want.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;893056

Unfortunately, it doesn't work as described. But I recognized that I don't have the most recent msgina.dll as mentioned in the article. Maybe that's the reason. Where can I get it?

Could one of you check if it works on your machine?

Thanks

Ok, maybe next time I should read all the stuff before asking silly questions......

I emailed their support about the issue, let's see when I get an answer.

Hey! Now that's what I call service! Wouldn't have expected this from Microsoft! Not even 24h after I emailed them they came back to me with the solution!

Now tell me: DOES that look nice? :D

Well, yes it is. But the registry changes alone won't do the trick. You need an additional file from Microsoft.
