Vista UAC - how to disable??
Vista UAC - how to disable??
I've just put Vista on my A31 and of course that means that the silly UAC is constantly asking for my permission to install updates, view the device manager etc. I've forgotten how to disable it and couldn't work out how to disable it. Can anybody help me?? Thanks!

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
It used to annoy me, but once i stopped thinking about it, it doesn't bother me. Same with Vista in general, once you stop getting hung up on what O/S you have, i find it a pretty good operating system. Both my two main laptops have it.
I did temporarily go to win7, then realised there is no email client and you have to deal with libraries which seemed too much aggro.

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
I don't know why people dislike Vista... I have it only on my HP DX2200 at the moment with a dual boot with XP, and it works fines, it doesn't crash etc. Ok, maybe it is not as fast as XP or Win 2K but it isn't that sluggish. I have XP on the A31 now and I installed the "RoyaleNoir" theme to make it look a bit like Vista - works a treat!

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
The only true downside of Vista is that it's quite resource-demanding, especially at default settings. They just added a whole lot of functionality, and didn't have time to optimize it properly. With Win7 they learned that lesson.
But if your computer is powerful enough and you tweak Vista a bit, it is a completely 100% OK operating system.

.2GB or more of RAMdr_st wrote:But if your computer is powerful enough
.2.0GHz Pentium 4 or better processor
.60GB or bigger hard drive (remember Vista takes up 15GB of HDD space!)
.7200 RPM or faster hard drive
.NVIDIA GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics cards
My recommended PC specs for Vista. Vista on 1.5GB RAM and 1.8GHz P4M processor on my A31 was really slow and horrible, however on my HP desktop (which dual boots XP Pro and Vista Ultimate) with the specs above, it is fine. I took precautions with the hard drive size on the HP however and I went for a 400GB HDD to install Vista on, so that I still had enough space for all my files!

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
I don't get why people always say that. I had Vista Business running on a 20GB partition (100GB drive) and after turning off the hibernation file and turning down pagefile (256-512MB, don't need a 2GB Pagefile) and turning off System Restore (i format instead) I had over 13GB free. Once i install Office 2007, Adobe Reader (lite), Nero 8.X.X.X (Micro) and a few other programs, i was barely at 10GB total.A31 wrote: .2GB or more of RAM

Yes, yes yes, my setup is far from typical but if you have 4GB of RAM then you'll be using up all this space for hiberfile and pagefile. 8GB+ alone was just those 2 files.

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
I'm not here to be crtical of Vista, as it can indeed be OK. I ran it for a short while and found it just wasn't for me so I returned to my optimized image of XP Pro. Then recently I did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro, and I really like it. I just cannot say enough good things about it. UAC is so much less pesky (yes you can also turn it off) and in general I find 7 a very good OS. Perfect? No, but a great start. After SP1, I would expect it to be better yet. Just my 2 cents anyway

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
We have the Win 7 Pro DVDs downstairs, I really want to try it out on my HP desktop, but my father has already installed it and becuase of activation etc etc I cannot run it, yet!!
I have used many computers with the Vista Home Premium system and I don't like Home Premium OS. I upgraded my Vista Ultimate from no service packs to SP1, through to SP2 and it is better with the service packs. Service packs do tend to make the OS better.
I like it a lot and I am sure Windows 7 SP1 will be great!
Vista Ultimate is excellent!!archer6 wrote:I'm not here to be crtical of Vista, as it can indeed be OK.
Although I haven't installed on my computer, I have used my Dad's with it, and I have to say - I cannot wait to have it on mine!!archer6 wrote:After SP1, I would expect it to be better yet.

You don´t disable Vista UAC, Vista UAC disables you.
"Vista UAC is off" - User. "User´s access is off" - Vista UAC.
Chuck Norris needs Vista UAC.

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
I was round a friend's house the other wee - he has Vista Home Prem with the UAC enabled - and we tried to install a game and we had to type in the password, and then we had to un-install the game and re-install it, so password required again - in fact I think we spent the whole evening just typing in the password!! Very pathetic and annoying...
...but I got a server on Monday (a HP ProLiant ML350 G4p) and I put Server 2003 Standard R2 on it and everytime I go on IE8 (I haven't bothered to install Opera yet!!) it keeps on blocking loads of content (some even from Microsoft!!) and saying that to view the content I have to add it to the 'Trusted Site's list - happily I found out how to disable it and everything is a lot easier on IE8 now - but I'm still going to install Opera 10.52 on it!!
Even so... I think the Server 2003 (and maybe 2008?) 'Internet Enhanced Security Configuration' is actually more annoying than the UAC in Vista!! I never thought I'd find something more annoying than UAC but I think I have!!

Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
Yes, since 2003 all M$ Server OSes have this setting per default, and yes, it is annoying, but it is understandable to be that way as it is a server OS, not a consumer OS like Windows. Then again, it is not really that big of a problem since there is a simple 'fix' for it. For that matter, if you still consider that as an annoying issue, then, I am telling you mate, you should be prepared for even more annoying and less easily solvable issues if you intend to use Server 2003 as a consumer OS (in fact much less 'user-friendly' than Server 2008).A31 wrote:Even so... Re: Vista UAC - how to disable??
I had never used Server 03 before, therefore I didn't know it would have that 'feature'. I may end up making a dual boot with XP Pro on that Server...
