Problematic Device in Win XP

#1 Post by Sasha » Thu Feb 24, 2005 6:47 pm

I was browsing through my Device Manager the other day and noticed an exclamation mark against entry "ISAPNP Read Data Port" under System Devices....

Tried downloading the drivers from Intel (infinst_enu.exe Ver 6.3.0.1007 dated 12/16/2004) and also from the IBM support site ( http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46058 ).....Both installations go through, but they are unable to correct the situation.

NOTE: The ethernet controller was not detected when I fresh installed XP, but downloading the appropriate drivers from the IBM site solved this....

Any suggestions??

Why not just use the standard IBM Preload? That will surely resolve the problem and create no other. That port on my T41 is driven by a standard Microsoft driver, not Intel drivers. Just a thought. ... JD Hurst

While some IBM apps are necessary for full functionality (HDD active protection) or surprisingly functional (software installer, access conncctions), there are a lot of reasons and situations for preferring a clean install.

I wish had some advice for the OP though. My ISApnp read port is also run by the MS driver - 7/1/2001, Version 5.1.2600.2180.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

Kenn....so does mine......only there is an exclamation mark against it... and when I click on "Update Driver", it searches on the web and says "Driver not found".

Since I read on the Intel website about ISAPNP and one file in particular, ISAPNP.vxd, I thought that the problem might be because of some missing Intel drivers....In the "General" tab for this device in the device manager, it says "on Intel(R) 82801DB LPC Interface Controller.."

I am a bit worried about this since aida32, something similar to SysInfo, indicates that there is no L2 cache, while CPU-Z and Memtest-86 report that L2 cache is working fine....

Is this something related to memory/L2 cache?

Doubt it has anything to do with the CPU or memory. I think it's a legacy driver of sorts, probably the plug and play driver for peripherals on the ISA bus (I don't know if the modem or port controllers or anything else on a thinkpad would still use ISA). Is anything actively not working?

I personally wouldn't worry about it too much at this point, but that link to the Intel 845/855 chipset drivers you listed would indeed be my first guess for fixing it. You might also want to see if Intel has a newer version of the 845/855 chipset drivers than IBM...

PS: I doubt the ethernet is of consequence. Tons of hardware on a thinkpad won't properly work until updated drivers are installed.

Thanks.....I had already checked out the latest Intel drivers as mentioned in my original post...Everything is working OK. I even uninstalled the device, rebooted the ThinkPad and ran it for a day with no adverse events....

Guess it is not something serious...just wish that it goes away!!!! :x

I read all the posts, but since my machines (2) use the preload and run faultlessly, *fast* and silky smooth, I never found a reason in all that I read here to do a clean install. Just my way, of course, and to each his or her own. .. JD Hurst
