Cleaning up a used computer

#1 Post by Microspeed » Sun Mar 07, 2010 12:55 pm

I recently got a used laptop with XP Pro and Office 2003. I would like to change the computer name a clear out the network Domain that it looks for. I didn't want to wipe the drive and do a fresh install because I would loose Office. How do I do this?

Assuming that you have the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, right-click it and select "Properties". Click on the "Computer Name" tab and you will find what you are looking for.

If you don't have the icon on your desktop, click the "Start" button, find the icon with My Computer or the name of your system, and again, right-click it then select Properties.

And a third way... Click on Control Panel, then System.

When I get one I like to take it a step further...

This does require playing with the registry. If you are not comfortable and experienced with this, back up your system first or don't try it:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type regedit in the textbox and click OK.
4. Regedit should load. Browse to this registry key:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
5. In the right panel, double click RegisteredOwner
6. In the value data field, change the name to whatever you wish
7. Click OK.
8. In the right panel, double click RegisteredOrganization
9. In the value data field, change the name to whatever you wish. You may also delete this text and just leave this field blank.
10. Exit regedit and log off or reboot.

Hope this helps.
