Help: can't mute built-in mic.

#1 Post by rsramirez » Tue Mar 01, 2005 2:22 pm

Hi folks,

When I listen to music (or anything, actually) I hear whatever is coming through the mic. For example, I have my headphones on listening to music, and I can hear faint typing. When I put my finger to the mic, and I can here it (like if I scratch, tap or blow into the mic).

In the Recording Control (click on speaker icon, go to Options > Properties > Recording, I put the volume down for all recoridng options, and I can still hear stuff coming into the mic. Even if I select a different recording device (for example, Line In), I still hear the mic.

It's a T42p/2373KTU/WinXPProSP2. My Windows XP Pro install is the base installation (reinstalled once using the restore discs).

Help!

Thanks.

Try this

Clcik on the speaker icon and check the box labelled "Mute" underneath the volume slider of Line-In by clicking on it...

This will disable the mic from functioning. When you want to record something using the mic, uncheck the box...

do what you did, except uncheck all recording inputs...

Please put location and other relevant information in your profile.

I've tried muting the Line In - I can still hear the mic. I tried muting everything - nothing works except for mute all and mute wave, but then I can't hear my mp3s!

I tried unchecking all recording inputs - at least one must be checked. Regardless of which one is checked, I can still hear the mic. Even with all the volumes set to the bottom.

I also verified that I have the latest audio drivers by comparing the version installed against what's available from IBM's website.

Any other ideas?

If you go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, do any of the sound (or any at all) devices have "!" after them?

Don't go through the recording menu.

Mute Mic and line in from the Playback menu, that's what determines what gets through to your speakers/headphones.

No prob! I remember that particular Windows quirk had me pulling out my hair for days! This was back in the Win95 days, or maybe even earlier :)
