Thunderbird has a really nice spam filter and looks/functions very much like Outlook Express.

I still use Outlook because I need to be able to sync with my PDA.

Thunderbird will import all of your mail and addresses during the setup. Pretty painless.

I would like to use Mozilla Thunderbird, because i'm very happy with Firefox and would like to use more Mozilla products. But I use outlook2003, because i sync my contacts and calender with my SonyEricsson S700i, which clearly doesn't support Thunderbird.

Unless you need any advanced outlook features, thunderbird is fast, has great spam protection and supports neat stuff like rss feeds. Give it a try.

Why give up what works? Bored eh, must be.
Prior to returning to OE, I used Eudora.

Why people give up on IE? because it's a virus magnet.

I know OE works cause i used it for couple of years. But there ought to be better things out there that are not MS.

I just want to support other alternative like Firefox, linux so i guess i'll give TBird a try.

Can TBird control several pop, imap accounts at the sametime? I just don't want to log on websites to check my various accounts.

Thanks for your reply

Yes, it can basically do whatever outlook can do, minus the workgroup features but with the extra spam filtering and rss feeds. Using a small program, it can even fetch hotmail accounts (gmail is pop3-enabled so it should be fine).

Put down my vote for Eudora. I'm running 6.2 now.

I've used Eudora as my primary email client since the early 1990s.

I don't allow Lookout or any of its express variants on my system.

Personally, I have been using The Bat! (the exclamation sign is part of the name) for several years now. Unlike Outlook, it tends to stop viruses dead in their tracks, has built-in PGP encryption if you ever need it, and it will handle a dozen (or more if you want) e-mailaccounts from different servers simultaneously. Recommended.
Recently they introduced a 'Voyager' version that can run completely off a USB key, so you can take your email traffic in your pocket and just plug the thing into any pc with an internet connection. Seems like a smart idea if you travel without a laptop.

as for me I have been using Courier for a long.
All your accounts can be manage in only one file. which makes it really easy to transfert backup and restore! Just take it with you on a USB key and all your email are with you..including the settings.

Been using gmail & yahoo personally. gigs of free storage so never need to delete, search and find any mail in like 2 seconds. they scan for virus for free. easy access from any computer anywere. never have to fool with how to get mail from one computer to the other...

Beats waiting on the next 'a new vunerability has been discovered in Outlook Express and a patch is available...' announcement.

I could go on and on, but my point is that web based mail is clearly the wave of the future.

Still using Outlook 03 at work tho. And don't get me wrong, Outlook is a slick program. I still use the contact/ calendar functions. But I still miss Lotus Organizer. That was about as easy as it could get. Anyone who's used a Daytimer could get to work with it instantly.

There are so many times that Outlook is just there with all my mail, and web mail is not available at the time. I think I will have died from ripe old age some decades into the future before web mail replaces local mail. Those of my acquaintances who use web mail to the exclusion of a local client seem to be unable to grapple with all we throw at them. It has its place - I guess I'm just not ready for the limitations as I see them.

thanks for all the reply...

Look like there are lots of favors out there....i personally will try Tbird and see how it goes.

Meanwhile, keep the comments coming...i like to hear stuff that you been using and like...

i try to stay away from MS as much as possible. I still have Lookout at school and i just dont like it very much...

They don't even have Firefox installed yet....

Whatever happened to Netscape in this thread?

Have been using it for over six years now .. and have found it fully competent for my needs.

Perhaps my most elaborate file organization is within my NETSCAPE Mail (ver 7.2 now) with thousands of sent and received msgs that support my work .. my email files now aggregate to over 2.3GB.

My original reason for Netscape was an ABM (anything but Microsoft) attitude .. tried Mozilla along the way but returned to Netscape, a well travelled path for me.

I use an email client known as "The Bat!" (from ritlabs.com). It's very good, very powerful, doesn't execute emails. I've been pleased w/it. For family, friends, and neighbors I've been installing Mozilla Thunderbird.

Agreed, but if you think one fully functional email client is safer than another, you've got it all wrong.

If safety's what you're after, try ePrompter:

I converted from OE to Thunderbird when 1.0 came out. The install and import from OE was fast and smooth. I wouldn't go back to OE or spend money on a commercial e-mail client. (Lotus Notes is the only exception, but it does a lot more than "just e-mail.")

One thing that's missing from TBird is support for Hotmail's proprietary HTML interface. Now I just start OE whenever I want to check my Hotmail accounts, which isn't often.

Outlook 2003 on my Athlon XP desktop and Outlook 2002 on all of my ThinkPads except the 600E and the 755CD. If you know how to take advantage of all the features, Outlook can be a really nice e-mail client.

after 1 week of Thunderbird usage, here is what i think

I have 2 stmp outgoing mail server that depends on where i'm at i have to use one of them.

TB does not seem to allow switching between them...I have to delete one stmp server to allow tb to use the other. it's very annoying.

Even i set one as default, tb does seems to allow rearranging of the order those server...it always using the server that on top, even the second server is default..

anyone know how to fix this or i have to change to another email clients?

I have a half dozen different SMTP setups. Simple matter to set up once and use with abandon with Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003. Maybe other clients do thus as well. ... JD Hurst

I use TB and like it a lot, the only "problem" is this is the only "major" email client that does not have a buildin backup/restore function. Outside of TB, I like Pocomail.

I'm using Outlook 2003 and it's pretty nice.

Does anyone use Lotus Notes? Does it work with normal POP and IMAP servers, or does it only work with Domino servers?

The versions of Notes I was familiar with (up to version 5) only worked effectively with Domino servers. The real value of Notes is that replication is superior to anything Outlook has to offer. However, Outlook replication can be made almost satisfactory and the interface and overall operation of Outlook is better in my opinion. I use and like Outlook 2003 as well.
