well, got to return the t42 back to ibm.

The way thunderbird handles import and export and how you have go some digging just to make your tb email compatible with other email progs is just too much..

I have backup the whole tb mail folder and haven't figured out how to import that to outlook yet

I think i'll go back to outlook 2003 or try the Bat!

i rareley use POP clients (i am in love with Gmail's Archove feature 8) ), but when i do, usually thunderbird. I've tried Outlook Express (very slow to boot) and Outlook 2003 (very slow, and needs to be split up into a few dfferent programs)...

Tbird is my favorite

Users of PDAs (PPC as well as Palm-OS) have no real alternative to Outlook. But I must admit that I like the features of Outlook. For mail client's purposes it's surely oversized but as a PIM it's IMO best of breed. Never had any problems with virus or trojans. I hope a regularly update of virus and malware protection software will prevent trouble.

LOTUS NOTES-- HELP PLS

#36 Post by ewthompson » Mon Jun 20, 2005 8:04 am

Anyone know how to configure Lotus Notes to serves as my email client ?(to retrieve my internet based ISP mail)

Does anyone have it successfully running on their laptop? (I am not part of a corporate network, so it would be standalone)...

Thanks.

I use IMAP4 through web interface. No need to worry about local email client 8)

you are using Lotus Notes?

Maybe I'm getting my terms mixed up. I just want to be able to check and respond to my ISP based email through the Lotus interface...

Unfortunately firefox loses in stability in memory management. One reason a lot of companies still haven't moved to it.

Yeah, I think firefox uses and leaks more memory than IE6.

FrankK-F wrote:Whatever happened to Netscape in this thread?

Have been using it for over six years now .. and have found it fully competent for my needs.

Perhaps my most elaborate file organization is within my NETSCAPE Mail (ver 7.2 now) with thousands of sent and received msgs that support my work .. my email files now aggregate to over 2.3GB.

My original reason for Netscape was an ABM (anything but Microsoft) attitude .. tried Mozilla along the way but returned to Netscape, a well travelled path for me.

Frank K-F
I, like Frank above, have been very happy with Netscape. I also use version 7.2. The only thing that I wish it did - is show that an e-mail has an attachment before opening it. At least my ISP - Earthlink - is very good for removing viruses before sending e-mail to my inbox. Also I do not open e-mail if it looks suspicious. I use a menu choice called "Message Source" to check out e-mail before opening - if I have any doubts. So far I have been virus free.

Using Lotus Notes R6 at work and installed R5 on my desktop to try out. It can work for POP and SMTP in general as a standalone client without server.

However, I did have problem setting it for SMTP for gmail (POP was ok though). Didn't manage to solve that, so have to use SMTP from my ISP instead.

That is interesting...I'd like to know how you set your up...as I recall I got an error message about having to specify a server for my email. This is where the problems began, I believe. What was strange is I was able to SEND mail, but not receive it. Any ideas?? Also the mail would not actually send when I hit the send button...I would have to hit the 'replicate' function for it to actually push the mail out.

Let me try to walk back the steps I did at the time. This is for R5 (R6 at work was set up by the IT guys :) ).

1) Go to File -> Mobile -> Locations. Opens a tab to show the locations available.
2) Then, choose Create -> Account. This opens another tab to setup an account.
3) Just fill in the details inside as per your ISP info, such as server name for POP, port no. etc.

You need to setup for POP and SMTP separately, since they use different servers.

Hmm.... Haven't use notes for some time, just tried to replicate with gmail and doesn't seem to work now. Maybe some of the settings have changed.

Previously, it did not send the email out immediately too. Not sure where to change the settings to ask it to send straight away. But under replication, you can choose how often to replicate automatically (need to enable replication schedule). It shd then push out the email when it next replicate.

At least R6 in my workplace don't have this problem. Outgoing mail is sent immediately.

FYI: Some ThinkPads include a license to Lotus SmartSuite (incl. Notes, but not access to Domino Servers). I found this in the "Thinkpad X40 Series" Service and Troubleshooting Guide in the back.

You have to buy the media, however, unless you already have it.

Yes, you own the license, and I also understand that you can get the media from IBM if you want to, no need to buy yourself.

However, I already have both Smartsuite and Lotus Notes prior to buying my thinkpad, so I haven't really tried getting from IBM before.

yea, i know its a the "windows OS" section. But i run Kmail inside of Kontact and it works REALLY well.

If you ever do switch to linux, evolution is a really good Email client as well and does exchange servers for the person that asked.

Its a fully functional workgroup and information management system. And syncing things using a hack or two is easier, and probably more secure, if you count out the fact that your using POP and SMTP :P

switched to thunderbird from outlook, but am back with outlook. thunderbird support for rules is weak. I guess thunderbird has its virtues, but if one really knows how to work outlook, i can't imagine a reason to swtich.

I currently use thunderbird and really like it, but I'll probably be switching to Outlook when I get my Smart Phone.
