Installing W2k

#1 Post by Rex » Thu Mar 03, 2005 5:04 pm

Hi there,

Here is the scenario!

I have a T22 currently running W98SE. I want to up-grade to W2k but (and there is always a BUT) it will take some time to get W2k configured the way I want it. I know that I can dual boot, BUT there is another scenario. My final goal is to only have one OS (W2k) on C:/

I have been advise that the way to go is as follows:

Create a second primary partition after C:/ using Partition Magic.

Install W2k to the second primary partition and get it configured the way I want in my own time.

When I am happy, use Ghost to make an image of the W2k primary partition.

Delete the C:/ W98SE partition and restore the W2k Ghost image to that partition. Alternatively, restore the W2k image over the W98SE OS partition. This will give me two primary partitions, each with W2k.

Delete the other (hidden) W2k primary partition. Now I should have W2k on C:/

When W2k is installed, I can hide one of the primary partitions so C:/ will always be the bootable partition with either W98SE or W2k as the OS.

So here is my quandary. I have created the second (now hidden) primary partition. If I hide W98SE, the other primary partition will be visible but be empty. Do I just insert the bootable W2k CD and follow the instructions? Do I use the PM Rescue disks to get back to the other (W98SE) partition should it all go horribly wrong?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Rex
Take care, take it easy and don't forget to smell the flowers!
