IBM Zoom/Magnify utility functions (Fn+Spacebar)

#1 Post by dvorak » Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:59 pm

I've wondered and haven't yet found a way to change the Fn+Spacebar to launch a zoom-tool, not tow down the resolution. I like the magnify window that can be bound to the middle Trackpoint button, but that means I have to give up scrolling.
Changing the resolution to VGA ain't much use when display stretching is disabled, but spawning the magnify window would be very handy.

Perhaps any one of you has some ideas or configuration options I've missed?

Thanks in advance.

If I may be forgiven for responding completely uselessly: the fn-space app doesn't really change your resolution to VGA, it scales the image in software and, iirc maximizes your active window. I never found it useful, and didn't reinstalled it when I reformatted.

Have you considered scrolling with the edge motion of the trackpad?

When I press Fn+Spacebar the screen resolution goes down to VGA, all of my desktop icons are messed up (there are re-aligned to fit VGA) and that's it. And this has been the behavior till the day I first started to use the machine (preloaded WinXP).

I prefer Trackpoing scrolling, it's extremely comfortable and I don't even have to lift a finger to use it.

I was just thinking of what's the use of that Fn+Space combination, simply going to VGA doesn't seem to be much of a reason to add a whole function-key ability to space.

I may be mistaken, but when I last used the function, the screen scaling did not trigger the horrible hardware-based LCD antialiasing you normally see when you switch resolutions. Despite the overall result/effect you notice, which I don't doubt, that's indication that the screen is still rendering at native resolution.

It does change the resolution, I've disabled the stretching so I'm left with a small box in the center of my screen.

I asked to see if anyone has perhaps found a utility or a configuration option that makes more use of this key combination. Especially because it has a magnify-lens icon on it.

Eh, ok that's weird (and pretty useless. I'm going to take your word for it because there's no way I'm going to reinstall the app to check ;)

Currently useless indeed, but I did make this thread to perhaps find some use out of it :)
