For XP there are (3) possible drivers;

1.) ADI SoundMAX onboard audio driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-44446
2.) ADI SoundMAX onboard audio driver with SPX software - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-44440
3.) Turtle Beach audio adapter - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-44860

Try all (3) drivers, uninstalling (and rebooting) in between if one does not work. Also make sure all audio is enabled in BIOS. If none of that works you can run PC-Doctor diagnostics on the audio chipset via a bootable CD.

Hi- the PC seems to wants to always install Soundmax- even though I removed the program and the drivers. Widows finds the drivers after reboot and installs automatically. I then try to update it in Device Mgr but it does not like Turtle driver.

Situation was that I placed PC back to a previous restore point and sound stopped working- I ran ESET and Hijack and it's clean.

Next step is the CD?

You should be able to install the IBM drivers over the Windows driver. All I was saying is that if the first driver does not work go into control panel add/remove programs and de-install it before attempting the new one. Don't worry about what windows does. ..and yes the next step would be PC-Doctor if they all fail. If that passes I'd try to reinstall Windows.,

Yes understood. Looks like i will go get a blank CD and try the diags.

Another alternative would be a cheap PCMCIA sound card

Appreciate your help
