What is this dialog box from Rescue and Recovery?

#1 Post by mtnester » Wed Aug 04, 2010 9:06 pm

I recently restored my Z61t (recently out of warranty) to the state is was in as of Dec 2007 (3 months after I first used it). It has been about a week and I've uninstalled Norton, installed Avast, OpenOffice and the Access broadband software, as well as the SP3 cumulative updates for XP Pro. I normally hibernate between sessions, only restarting every few days.

Today I brought my TP out of hibernation and a R&R dialog box appeared that is totally confusing because it consists only of a callout containing a big question mark and radio buttons for Yes and No. The Close box is grayed out and right-clicking on the task bar icon has Move as the only option, so it won't close.

So . . . what does this dialog box mean? Should I answer Yes . . or . . No ? Or how can I get out of it? :banghead:

Hope someone has a clue! I appreciate everyone's views.

Isn't that the most annoying thing? My z61t does the same thing in the same way. At first I thought the text that must be missing was R&R asking to restore my system to factory-fresh, and hurried to click No.

Then I figured out it was asking to do a incremental backup (at least I think so, since it doesn't take very long).

Searching this very site brought up a thread on the same thing a few years ago:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=36677

It reveals this as a known issue the next version of R&R was supposed to fix.

Found the above using this special search via Google for this site, which you could just right click on and save as Thinkpads.com Forum Search or whatever:

Thanks, Mike!

That was exactly my problem, which I resolved by changing my R&R backups from automatic.

I had tried doing a search for the answer, but apparently just couldn't get the proper search terms or something. Appreciate your help.

You're entirely welcome.

Yes, the right keywords to look for were a pain. At first I thought just searching for "question mark" would be enough. But hundreds of folks here have said things like "upgrading to Vista is a big question mark for me."

The winning combination was "question mark" and "R&R."

Of course, I did know what the prompt meant from personal experience, I guess the hard part was being brave enough to click Yes to it the first time! :)
