Deleting old backups

#1 Post by Milhouse » Wed Mar 09, 2005 12:19 pm

Simple question: how do I delete my old backups I did on my HD? The files are hidden and I can't find this function in the rescue&recover software....

If you are running R&R 2.0, go (un-intuitively :-)) to "Back Up Now".. at the bottom left of the resultant window, you will find "Delete Backups".

Please add location and other pertinent information to your profile. Not required, but appreciated.

Thanks for the hint, I just entered some information about me!

It looks like I'm running "IBM Rescue and Recover with Rapid Restore" when I press the AccessIBM button on startup and "IBM Rapid Restore Ultra" when in windows. And I can't find the "delete backups" here anywhere...are this old versions? They came with my new T42p a month ago!

in older Rapid Restore versions you can delete old backups by just doing a new backup and when a window with checkboxes pops up where you can select the backup location just deselect all checkboxes.

You can lookup the R&R version in the help menu. Deleting backups is much easier using the latest R&R 2.02.178, so considering an update could be the right choice. Btw. even brandnew Thinkpads are preloaded mostly with outdated software and drivers.

I think I'll update to the newest version. I did think that a new Thinkpad would be delivered with the newest software...

I can't believe this is a over 300Mega File

do it now while it's new, because when you install it, it will delete all your restore points.....

This brings up a question I've been wondering about...

Do the incremental backups capture the differential between the base and the current backup, or between the last incremental and the current backup?

To put that another way - Suppose I copy to DVD and delete the 5 incremental backups but not the base. I then run a new incremental backup. Do the base and new incremental form a complete backup set or would I need to restore the base, the 5 incrementals from DVD, and then the curent backup?

I was wondering about that too.

I now have the newest version from the IBM site. Why does a 300M download install to a 30M application?

This new version crashes when I want to select the directories which should not be updated (the ones I have mp3s and video files in). Why does it doe this and what can I do against it?

1. Why does a 300M download install to a 30M application?

1. Because most of it installs to the hidden partition.

2. Don't know. I don't remember excluding anything when I installed it. Others?

1. OK thats great, thanks.

2. I need this feature, if this doesn't work then the utility is not usable for me...
