Radlinker and Radeon 7500 speeds - what's stable?

#1 Post by K. Eng » Wed Mar 09, 2005 7:35 pm

In my neverending quest to find a solution to the always-running fan, I've tried to do some experiments to lower the temperature of the GPU. I noticed that under battery power, my T40's fan rarely turns on, and I theorized that the PowerPlay featue on the Radeon 7500 caused it consume less power and dissipate less heat, thus triggering the thermal sensor less often.

I'm using Radlinker to test the clock speeds, but I've run into some stability problems. I clocked down from the default 258/364 core/mem settings to 67.5/67.5, which is the default for PowerPlay, but this causes my system to crash :(

Has anyone found low settings that are stable?

Thanks in advance!

edit - Using IBM Driver 8.062.2.041023m-019104C. Already tried the Omega drivers and they crash my system!

Mines at 290/371 though I know that's not much help cause I'm adjusting up, sorry. You'll just have to experiment.

I'm using the IBM drivers not the Omega as well though no crashes just weirdness/one game wouldn't run with the Omega drivers.

You're aware the fan is on the CPU not the video proscessor, right?

Yes, the fan is on the CPU, but there are thermal sensors on the board connected to the embedded controller that trigger fan operation.

This thread may be a moot point. I've got another thread in the T series forum about the WiFi card triggering continuous fan operation. I now think it's the WiFi card and not the GPU.

Hmm..At least that will be simple to troubleshoot since the wifi card is easily removable.
