SMBus driver smbusdh.sys blue screen waking from hibernation
SMBus driver smbusdh.sys blue screen waking from hibernation
I've been having random blue-screens with various errors when I return from hibernation, last one was INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM, also seen IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop messages and all relate to smbusdh.sys driver.
I've tried to waking from hibernation multiple times, with no luck, that means I have to resort to removing my restoration data and do a clean boot, this of course is not good when you had programs running that you needed.
It was about 2 weeks ago when I had that last STOP message, so I'm having a hard time pinning the problem down. Doing my own research on the memory dumps probably isn't much help either.
I have tried reinstalling the SMBus driver from the IMBTools folder, a while ago, appearantly didn't help.
Windows update or IBM update don't seem to have updates either that relate to the SMBus driver.
I appreciate any help you can give.
PS: Running SP2-XP

Quite an old thread you've resurrected, haven't had that problem in a long time luckily.noetus wrote:Hi, I've had exact same problem - first IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and then INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM blue screen stop errors, with smbusdh.sys listed as culprit in the INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM error from hibernation. Am running T42 with Win 2003 server. Any help appreciated!
First thing you could do is update everything you can, BIOS, Power Management software and Power Management drivers (with the Software Installer)

I have a T42, and while I have not had your problem, I remember seeing the following in the Driver Matrix for the T42. Perhaps this is your fix.
Updated SMB Device Hub controller driver to correct Windows blue screen error

Quite a new fix there, I had this problem about 10 months back, and now remembered and saw how I fixed it. I simply removed the driver.
Now I went to check the version according to the driver matrix info to check if I somehow had managed to update the driver, but my IBM - SMB Device Hub category was nowhere to be found.
Found out that the faulty driver comes with CSS software. I'm not quite sure on what SMB exactly does, and is it really needed.
Do you both have the SMB Device Hub category in your Device Manager?

Thans, but I see that too, and thatt was not the one I removed 6 months ago. The one causing all the problems had its own category, but seems that trouble was the only thing it was contributing, perhaps it was related to the security chip? Who knows.GomJabbar wrote:The only device I see listed in Device Manager is the INTEL(R) 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller -24C3. No drivers are listed for this device. In fact, the smbusdh.sys file is not on my T42.

I just found this old thread, and am glad I did - I updated the file smbusdh.sys from the IBM site as recommended, indeed it was an older version, and so far have not had a recurrence of the problem. I do have the following installed under 'System Management Bus controllers': IBM - SMB Device Hub' and 'IBM (ICH4) SMB Host Controller'. I do have IBM security system installed, so maybe that's it?
Totally possible. I haven't experienced any crashes nor any missing functionality after removing the driver, though I'm not using the security system either, so can't comment on that.noetus wrote:I do have IBM security system installed, so maybe that's it?
