Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
I upgraded my Thinkpad Z60t to Windows Vista and now have no sound. Also, my "wireless network card is missing a driver" according to Windows Problem Reports & Solutions. According to Windows Problem Reports and Solutions, my wireless card is Sierra Wireless MC5725 Modem. However, the Z60t isn't one of the computers with this wireless card according to the Lenovo website.
As for the sound, I have no idea what's going on. It says my speakers aren't connected, even though they are of course part of the laptop. It doesn't work with earbuds either.
I'm pretty clueless about computers, so you're going to have to lead me through fixes like I'm a 2-year-old....
Thank you!

Have you gone to Lenovo System Update yet? That may be where your drivers are, including "hot keys" drivers for turning volume and display brightness up and down. Your wireless driver should be there also.

Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
Well what I think may be the problem with sound is that there's this thing called High Definition Audio Device. I don't know what it does, but it wasn't there in XP.
What's Lenovo System Update? Sorry, I'm just totally clueless.

Go here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... pdate.html
And download System Update 4.0 (not the read me or learn about file -- just the System Update 4.0)
After you download the file, run it and follow the prompts -- it will scan your machine and give you a list of the drivers you need -- check the drivers you want to download, and let System Update download and install them for you, and you should be back in business. Sometimes after you install the drivers it gives you, and after you restart your machine, you may need to go back and make sure there are not additional drivers.
Watch the menu -- System Update will show you which drivers are recommended, and which are optional -- but you will probably want some of the optional updates also.
You also want to make sure you are up to date with Microsoft Updates, especially the security ones.

I downloaded 3.14 because it said that it was the Vista version. This sounds very helpful. Thanks! I'll post when I get it up and running.
Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
Oh good -- you found the correct version -- it will work just like Microsoft Update, and you should be good to go

Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
Unfortunately, it didn't fix the sound, although it DID seem to fix my other problems. I think the sound problem lies somewhere in the High Definition Audio Device. It wasn't there in XP but it's here in Vista. I'm guessing it's interfering with the sound system, but I definitely don't want to mess around with it until someone can tell me exactly what to do.
Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
You can check in Device Manager for your sound drivers -- see if any are marked with an exclamation point. Do you have the volume (speaker symbol) in your lower right task bar, and does it work?

Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
My sound controls are working fine. Also, I still get system sounds such as beeps and such out of my computer but things such as games and YouTube don't work. I checked my sound drivers and it says they're all fine too.
Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
I have found what may be a solution. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to follow the instructions. How do I uninstall/reinstall the sound card drivers and what is BIOS?
Read http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1366. This is the solution I found. Please help me understand it!

Boot up your machine, as soon as the IBM/Lenovo splash screen shows, press F1.
That will show you the first BIOS screen.
The latest BIOS version is 1.24
The latest Embedded Controller program is 1.18
What are your versions as displayed on that screen?
If you need to update them, do the BIOS first, then the ECP.
You can download those files here:
BIOS: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61687
ECP : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61686
Full instructions are on those pages.
Unless you have Vista 64-bit installed, you can run these updates from within Windows.
You could also run ThinkVantage SystemUpdate which should be on your laptop, and which should find the above programs by itself, and install them for you.

Re: Thinkpad Z60t no sound and wireless card problems in Vista
It says that I need an ECP of 1.16 or higher to update my BIOS. Unfortunately, my ECP is only 1.02. Should I go ahead and update the ECP first?
