Geez, you guys make me feel a tad old. I just ordered a W520 as an upgrade from my trusty R51. (Which will remain in service as a back-up, btw.) However, I remember buying my Tandy RL1000 running a fire-breathing Intel 8086 and sporting a whopping 20 MB hdd.

I would definately turn off the virus scanners resident parts, and just scan any file downloaded with it or at http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Ditch the defender in favor of Spybot Search & Destroy, only use it's on demand portion... with noscript/adaware you can skip the resident part of spybot.
I would say you are pretty secure, prolly more so then a lot of machines I come across on a daily basis
I cringe nowadays when I sit down at someones machine and see IE is their main browser... or even those who choose Firefox don't have Noscript & AdBlock

Yep and infact I just upgraded from Windows 98 SE. My computer that I use and have used since Y2K is a custom built Gateway 750 Performance with a good ol' Pentium III inside
Re: Is anybody still using windows 2000?
Coincidentally I just recently brought an 8086 machine w/ a 20 MB hard disk online to the internet. I upgraded it with a V30 and 8087-2, though.WA2SI wrote:Geez, you guys make me feel a tad old. Up until a year ago I had a T22 running 2000 but it only used with a standalone scanner - I never used it to connect to the internet - I only packed that machine away when the scanner broke and I had to buy a new one. I still have XP on a Samsung NC10 netbook - I tried a lightweight version of Mint designed specifically for netbooks (mine has 2G or RAM) but it didn't run as well as XP does. I till use that NC10 as it has a great keyboard and a 500G drive with a load of film on it -it great when I go away - I use it mainly for writing - songs/poetry - I have a 10" Sony tablet but I prefer the NC keyboard.

Re: RE: Re: Is anybody still using windows 2000?
I run Slackware on a Thinkpad X120e with Windows 2000 in a virtual machine, isolated from the net. I use the machine for my office tasks (Office 2000 with the compatibility pack is still my favourite office suite). The nice thing is that it's distraction free (no browser, no email), yet I can still use Dropbox, since anything I save to the host OS Dropbox folder gets sync'd as usual.lemonstar wrote:Up until a year ago I had a T22 running 2000 but it only used with a standalone scanner - I never used it to connect to the internet - I only packed that machine away when the scanner broke and I had to buy a new one.
