Need help getting progam to run under "restricted user.

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Fri Mar 25, 2005 2:40 pm

I have a couple programs that won't run under the "resticted user" settings, it seems that they are trying to write and update to either the registry or an .ini file which seems to be forbidden under that setting. Is there any way to loosen the restriction so that programs cannot be installed, but these types of programs will run? It's a pain to have to log out and back in as administrator to run them, plus all the usual menus etc are then different.

Thanks

Are you doing this for yourself? or for a user?

If yourself, why not just make your userid a member of the admin group (and be sure to use strong passwords and secure your machine).

If for a user, what are the programs involved? Different methods for different programs. ... JD Hurst

You can try downloading regmon from http://www.systeminternals.com. It lets you monitor the registry as you run an application. From there you can edit the registry and give appropriate permissions to the entries causing problems.

You'll need to use the "runas" command to run regmon as administrator while logged on as the restricted user.

Cheers,
Rob.

Either you run the program in the Admin context (righclick on the program symbol -> run as) or you give the application folder underneath c:\program files write access for regular users. This mostly solves the problems.

In general you can use filemon or regmon (to audit the registry access) to detect where exactly the problem is.
