FDISK/MBR -how to specify drive?

#1 Post by Marc_G » Sat Mar 26, 2005 8:23 pm

Hi folks-

I've occasionally needed to FDISK/MBR a hard drive. These days when I boot DOS for utility purposes it's from a USB key that mounts as a "hard drive" assigned to C:.

From this environment, if I issue the FDISK/MBR command, it performs the operation on the USB key instead of the real hard drive in the computer. I'm sure there is a parameter to use; I just haven't come across it.

Can anyone straighten me out?

Another thing: is there any reason NOT to use the FDISK from Win98 DOS on an XP system? I'm trying to avoid the need to ever boot the XP CD.

Thanks

Marc

Thanks James-

Does this assume that an unmounted drive (such as an unpartitioned/unformatted or NTFS so not seen in DOS) will just be refered to as "D:\" ?

Whatever HD is next in the DOS logical hierarchy from the BOOT drive will be D:, then E: for your optical drive, etc.

So if you BOOT from a USB device that is recognized as C: then the HD in the normal primary slot will be D: by default as long as the BIOS recognizes it.
