51nb's X62: latest update
Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
I too am interested in rejuvenating my trusty X61T. I'd also be interested in a board.

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
I would buy one for my X61 tablet.
For the tablet buttons, I would use a microcontroller with the tmk keyboard firmware. The digitizer has a UART Interface and there is no easy way to make the wacom drivers work with it if you connect it via USB UART adapter. But there are some wacom digitizers that work directly with USB, see here. Should be no problem to use one of these instead of the original one. Only the different aspect ratio could be a showstopper.

Is there a capacitive 12.1" 4:3 multi-touch panel that you know? I think it'll be more attractive than a CPU upgrade. Obviously for a convertible tablet performance isn't that important.

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
+1, but i am on the other side of the pond;)
I have short googled for <12" multitouch capacitive>. And yes with wide screen LCDs everywhere more touch panels are widescreen to. But on Aliexpress some sellers have something like <Customize capacitive touch screen panel for 2" ~55">. You may ask your friends from China if it possible to make custom sized touchpanels.
And i have found one lot with complete POS terminal with 12" SVGA (4:3) Cap. TP on Ali.
Other question - how do you combine Wacom digitizer (that can only resistive TP) and this Cap TP?
With newer i5 IMHO X61t can survive more hours on battery than with original Merom ULV.RMSMajestic wrote: Is there a capacitive 12.1" 4:3 multi-touch panel that you know? I think it'll be more attractive than a CPU upgrade. Obviously for a convertible tablet performance isn't that important.

No, but I did not search for one. I only use the pen anyway. Is there a capacitive 12.1" 4:3 multi-touch panel that you know?

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
I've been searching for 12.1" capacitive solutions as well as a retrofit for a regular X61, but from what I've seen, the glass thickness (often in excess of 3mm) probably makes it prohibitive unless the lid is redesigned, and finding one with a thin enough bezel also has proven tricky.
EloTouch seems to make some that might work, but they told me they're not sold outside of integrated units / screens.
I'd be interested in opening this up as a project / experiment though.
[Also, sign me up for a board, if the group buy happens! ]

I'd probably be down for an X61 and/or X61t board, depending on cost.

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
+1 I am also interested in a X62 motherboard.
Any news so far, or is it likely to end as the T50?
IMHO they should open-source all the technical details so that we could start a kickstarter campaign to build them ourselves and pay 51nb contributors a license fee or kickback of any kind.
edit:
Would the following X61 be compatible with this mobo?
ThinkPad X61 - 7674-D52
(Based on 7674-4NU: T7100(1.8GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11agn wireless(n-disabled), Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, 8c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32)

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
I'd totally go for one. I recently went from a X41 as my main ultraportable to an X61S. I could do with a bit more oumph since the dv4mini software seems to be a bit greedy with cpu power...

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
okay, updates:
first batch was out for sale, but it was sold out very soon. I think it's better to wait for the less buggy 2nd batch.
But there's definitely 2nd batch, and I should be able to get my hands on it.
Also, BIOS will enable a lot of features such as TDP settings
Just not sure if you will be able to set multipliers though

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
I noticed the other day that someone has listed one of these for sale on eBay with a buy it now price of $4,788! Here is the ended listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/301840169167?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
I would definitely be interested in a board if it ever becomes available. I have found myself using my X61 with SXGA+ LCD with LED modification more lately, so it would be nice to upgrade it again.

So this motherboard will actually be generally available. Any idea on how many they plan on making?
Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
Ok, this is really just an excuse for a bump.
But will the new replacement board have HDMI output to tv screen/monitor for streaming movies?

I could see myself spending Surface Book levels of cash on a machine like this.

Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
Yeah, i'm out. Ripped apart a X61 to swap boards into my X61s but i dont think the smaller fan can cope. Now unless that Haswell runs load at absolute zero, i dont think the X61s fan can keep it under control either.
Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
DaKKs: I started with two of the X61s models because I thought I would like the smaller "s" version better. But they got too hot (purchased, but couldn't figure out how to install a second palmrest fan) and they did not have the speed of the full size X61 models. So, I bit the bullet and bought two of the 2.4Ghz x61 "full size" models. And am much happier with the full size models. They are not much bigger than the "s" version. So, based on my experience, you may want to consider using and modding the full size.
Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
Honestly, mate. My X61 is in near mint nick, and i doubt i'm gonna find a non-s model in this condition. To me the X62 mod would be a fun project, i like the X6X series, but not enough to go out of my way to build the perfect one. I'm gonna wait on the boards and in the unlikely event it runs cool enough, or can be throttled in a functional manner. I might invest in one, but i'm quite good with running a stock X61 until it becomes unusable. It can run my programming software and DV4mini control panel. Aside from writing, that's all i use it for.E350 wrote:DaKKs: I started with two of the X61s models because I thought I would like the smaller "s" version better. Re: 51nb's X62: latest update
I'd take one, too.
IF the DFX files are available I could get them produced locally.
The big component manufacturer in town told me for boards they usually do an Initial run of 200, to control the manufacturing process is running correctly.
Then minimum run is between 2000-5000 depending on the particulars of the board.
If smaller runs were needed they said their prototyping company could be used.

That's just for the motherboard. Including CPU I'd say around $500. CPU is soldered on board and must be sold together, of course.DaKKS wrote:I've seen the number 320$ floating around.

The trial-produced X62 mainboards were about 50 pcs and installed by early this month, about 90% were working very well, so we are about to produce the final version late this month or on March.
The price of X62 mainboard including i7-5500u/5600u is about USD $430(2800yuan RMB).
I'll post some pictures of X62 mainboard later.
Thanks to all.

You may be surprised on the big fan base of loyal ThinkPadders we have around here, many of us were very interested in some of your projects on 51nb.com, unfortunately the language barrier prevented us to know/participate more, luckily RMSMajestic and others kept us up to date on the X62.
I'm looking forward to the X62 pictures and I hope there is a practical/comfortable way for you to ship/sell these units out of China.
Now if you allow me to stretch your patience with an extra question, is there any other ThinkPad related project you're working over there that we may not be aware of? If yes, would you mind opening some new threads in the respective subforums? (E.g. the T50 models, which a couple of users here manage to get their hands on)

the fan(modified by the fan of X61) is included, which is not the same as the fans of X61, so you do not need to worry about the fan, you should just prepare an 'empty' X61, that's ok.jaspen-meyer wrote:Hi Hope, hopejyb wrote:

When some of the final version of X62 produced(should be on March),we want to start the project of X202 which will be specified for X200/X201 and T70 for T60/T61. but this will be one or two months later.
Now I'm using the X62 to post here ,so good.
