Who Would Make and sell me a 600x Frankenpad???

#1 Post by Alexanders » Thu Aug 10, 2017 4:12 am

Those older thinkpads from year 2000.

Sturdy Chassi and the best keyboard of all thinkpads!

Any modders here would put a newer motherboard and processor with integrated gpu, and sell it? Id love to have one with a low voltage cpu so I can keep the fan at 0 and with a ssd have a quiet machine!

Would it be any harder than making a t60 frankenpad other than the fact that theres no one who did it prior? Let me know, cheers!

The T60 and T61 and even the T5xx all use very similar motherboards to swapping is a breeze. The problem with the 600X is that it has no counterpart board.

Your max specs are:
850Mhz CPU
576MB RAM
13.3" XGA LCD
etc.

So, you can still put a nice mobo. Check out el-sahef's 600X with an i3. What your looking at will be a very difficult but achievable mod.

el-sahef sold the 600X i3 to me. He now has a 600X with i7 and says he won't be making any more of them. However, you can "easily" build one yourself following his guide here: https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/21027 ... ost1947439

600X

That's one awesome Thinkpad you got there. Kudos to el-sahef for such an incredible build.

BTW, how is the keyboard connected to the board?

I asked him the same thing. Im pretty sure the keyboard subcard is getting powered and the PS/2 signal is getting hijacked off the keyboard controller chip

Would you pm me his email? I would like to ask him if he can build one for me ty!

Core i3s have Speedstep. IIRC the last processors that were locked to a single CPU speed were Core 2 Duo-era Celerons.

Or maybe you're thinking of Turbo Boost? Only i5s and i7s have that.

The ultra low voltage i3 is more like slowstep! Hahaha. Acutally just curious 600X but gow fast is it?

Fair enough for everyday tasks. There is one major problem with this system: poor LCD...

With a SSD and Xubuntu installed, I'd say pretty fast. The HD3000 does help a lot.

The 600X i3 has a Toughbook CF-74 panel installed. Great black levels, great contrast and great viewing angles. The only thing it lacks is resolution, I will admit that.

And I don't think there is any rework possibilities. With screen of that size you simply are limitted to XGA.

Swap the lid with a 600 12.1" Lid, add 12.1" SXGA+. Done.

Thank you very much for letting me know that he's on here! Do you know his username?? I would definitely be interested to buy a nice laptop for christmas or something!

What I want in my laptop:

1. 2017 intel processor with integrated graphics. Some of the fastest ULV processor that won't make the fan budge at all! Maybe even the latest canonlake 10nm processor that will be released in Q2 2017!
2. Kingston SSD. Of course dont wanna be spending money on a cpu and have an old fashioned hard drive as bottleneck!! Also I did some research a long time ago, and turns out kington was the best SSD for windows Xp.
3. Windows XP!...the best operating system! I know that xp can only use 3.5 or 3.25GB of ram. I can live with that. If there would be another kind of xp that can support more then perfect, but I can live with this no problem!
4. Updated screen from xga to sxga or some matte screen with better resolution (if possible). If not possible then no problem!
5. Two 2gb Sticks
6. Upgraded Wifi (did 600 xd have wifi?) , maybe upgraded sound card if possible.
7. I'm not rich but I want this to be a win-win, I want this be worthwhile for the person doing it because afterall, he's helping me!

Kingston is not the best SSD for *any* OS. You may want to re-do your research...
3. Windows XP!...the best operating system! I know that xp can only use 3.5 or 3.25GB of ram. I can live with that. If there would be another kind of xp that can support more then perfect, but I can live with this no problem!
I'm not certain that the latest Intel platforms even support XP...you may want to verify that before asking someone to do a custom build for you.

BTW, 600 series did not have integrated wireless - or even wired LAN for that fact - but that's not unresolvable.

Actually, you can install the 12,9" iPad display which gives you retina resolution, but it's hard to find the 13.0" bezel and the iPad display wasn't available for purchase at the time of modding. The only other display would be the 13" 1280x1024 of the 770Z, though you'd probably have to mod the bezel for that.

How about 3d printing the bezel?

It will be a bit sensible to heat, but there are solutions for that :)

There are lots of things you could do, but one of the main aims of the device was to maintain a sense of untouched originality, despite the heavily modified internals. I don't use it as my main machine, so I'm happy with CF-74 panel.

Yea youre absolutely right, I was thinking in fact maybe there's another flexview screen out there or another matte display but I don't mind low resolution at all. I'll take a matte screen over glare any day, no matter the resolution difference. I like my thinkpad screen a lot more than my mom's glossy macbook screen. Much easier on the eyes for longer laptop use...hey thanks to everyone helping out so far, you guys are all great!

You guys are lucky. el-sahef is selling his 600X with i7: https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/20911 ... 120-GB-SSD

This is literally your last chance to get a machine like this.

Are you using that 600X? Not asking to buy it nor telling you what to do with it, but it's a bit sad to see a good machine go unused.. especially after it's been upgraded.

No, I think that el-sahef built another one with an i7 mobo. There should be two of them.

I told him I wanted to buy but haven't heard back. I think he said that shipping and stuff would be a hassle, and especially since it has a battery inside.

I would buy it it's an extremely nice laptop but I can also have a custom made one later maybe with an atom processor or something ulv...or maybe just this same type but with windows xp 64bit, all the drivers and undervolting on it. I know it would cost a lot more to get that made, but I could always wait till my startup kicks off, then money shouldn't be an issue
