51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
Hello,
Apparently 51nb guys are working on a new I5-8250u 4 cores motherboard, with 1920x1200 16:10 IPS screen (they are selling them, too!) The motherboard will be produced next year, but they are already taking orders. You can visit their fb page for more details
Personally I'm not ordering one, since I'm very much happy with my x230 classic keyboard mod. But I think this is what Lenovo should have done instead of messing up with the Thinkpad line...
What do you think guys?

51nb makes things for fans, Lenovo makes computers for businesses. Lenovo should do whatever makes them more money and ThinkPad fanboys buy used stuff, complain a lot and don't appreciate anything. You can't sell to those people.alisan wrote:But I think this is what Lenovo should have done instead of messing up with the Thinkpad line...

Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
And speaking of 51nb motherboards, if they make something similar to X62 - I would rather buy T470. At least it was properly designed and has support.
Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
I am trying to get one of the x210 boards from https://weidian.com/item.html?itemID=2205138453 did some one already order a board to Europe? Since as far as I saw it is not possible to fill in a European address in the web shop, how did you do it?
Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
I did not, actually I'm not even planning to order one. But I know that your best bet is to contact them on facebook.
Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
Hi!
I ordered a x210 with an i7-8550 by contacting the email listed here.x3kcl wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2017 10:09 amI am trying to get one of the x210 boards from https://weidian.com/item.html?itemID=2205138453 did some one already order a board to Europe? Here the T470 is significantly more expensive (new at least) than the x210 (1700 usd with a discount on alza.cz for example, with i5, 8G of RAM and 256G SSD). That being said, I'm mostly buying it because I do find the idea really cool (I do like the idea of having a 16:10 screen but for example, but I have never used any of the old thinkpad keyboards so that will be a discovery), plus maybe with support they'll carry on and become better...nitrocaster wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 4:18 amAnd speaking of 51nb motherboards, if they make something similar to X62 - I would rather buy T470. Cool thanks for the hint with the reddit forum. They had a good hint to use https://SuperBuy.com for processing. Will see how it works

Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
You can get one on eBay.
No they won't. They had support while selling X62 mobos and unfortunately it seems they just don't care.Tyruiop wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2017 6:41 pmThat being said, I'm mostly buying it because I do find the idea really cool (I do like the idea of having a 16:10 screen but for example, but I have never used any of the old thinkpad keyboards so that will be a discovery), plus maybe with support they'll carry on and become better...

Hey, not all Thinkpad fanboys are the same. Along with the loud whiners and complainers, there are also quite a few folks, even on this forum, who have purchased the Thinkpad 25, and love it.nitrocaster wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 4:13 amThinkPad fanboys buy used stuff, complain a lot and don't appreciate anything. Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
You are making me have a few second thoughts to be honest.
That being said, I kind of have the impression that if the experience turns into a nightmare and I can't get Linux to run properly and stuff like that, their laptops seem to be fairly easy to resell to collectors (unless they break down).

X62 is not that bad, but there is definitely a "play at your own risk" aspect to these projects. Thankfully the risk has payed off for me. I love mine. T70 has some keyboard and trackpoint issues that need to be ironed out.

Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
Well, I think fanboys and fans are not the same. True fans know what exactly they like and understand what can or can not be done in new models.

Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
I personally decided against buying the mobos, mainly because of availability. If it goes poof, it's just not worth it. A used 20/30 generation or 61 if you prefer a good panel is the better choice.
A lot of people do love them though. Still, I imagine it's more for the great keyboard and the 4:3 panels than the mobos themselves.

Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
I can see where you are coming from, but nothing wrong if it's constructive. Especially when it's a bit of a regression - e.g. slicing the top off 16:10 panels. Consumers have the right to demand better products, after all the market doesn't exist without them.nitrocaster wrote: ↑Thu Nov 30, 2017 9:37 amWell, I think fanboys and fans are not the same. Large companies are not innovators, the economics and momentum of this are fairly obvious. We rely on small players to disrupt the stagnation in the market, and while I know they fit into a niche, I think it's quite neat what 51nb are doing. They might not influence the market hugely but they may create some ripples.

The parcel with my board arrived yesterday evening, you can find some pictures here. It's not completed yet but so far it seems to be working well.

Can anyone share their experiences with the lcdfans products?
51nb X210 with community EC mod, me_cleaner and recelled 99W*h battery; X230 with coreboot, me_cleaner and nitrocaster's FHD mod as a backup; R500 for guests; T60 just for the looks.
Re: 51nb 8th generation intel x201 motherboard
Forget about support.
Expect troubles when trying to run any Microsoft OS.
I'll 100% double nitrocaster - 51nb systems are for thinkfreaks, and running Linux. Windows goes crazy on them.
I have owned X62. Swapped back to X61 w/T9300, and lived happily.
I have owned T70. Swapped back to T601p, and lived happily.
I must say I've had more problems with T70 than X62. Did lots of own mods to fix them, and the very most of help came from the forum users.
Still, these guys do a great job. Would I buy their systems again? I definietely would. And if living on Linux, I'd take them as must-have.
