high pitched fan vibration at low fan speeds on the x62

#1 Post by bitonic » Wed Nov 29, 2017 11:59 pm

Hi,

I can finally control the fan speed on my x62 ( viewtopic.php?f=80&t=125041 ). However, when the fan is spinning slowly (around level 20 when I control the speed using my program) they emit a very high pitched noise, I think due to some vibration.

I can solve the problem by never running the fans at that speed level, but that's quite unsatisfactory since the next fan speed is relatively loud.

Is the high pitch noise due to fan vibration a well-known problem, and if yes can one fix it by cleaning / lubing / replacing / ... the fan?

Thanks,
Francesco

Can't remember having heard of a high pitched noise. However, the fan sounds differs depending on whether you have a X6x, X6xs, X200 or X200s based fan. Having an s model with a modified non-s heatsink, I first modded my X60s fan to match it but it was worn out and noisy. Then I moved to a Sunon maglev for X200s and its sound is perfect. Low, non-disturbing noise.

ok, i've taken it apart the laptop and the high-pitched noise seems to come from the fan motor -- i get the high pitched noise even if i take out the fan and leave just the motor running. so i'll probably replace the fan.

i've ordered the x200 sunon maglev fan, and will try to replace it.

for future reference, this is the fan and heatsink i had in my 4th batch x62:

looking around the fan the x62 shipped with seems to be FRU 45N4782, with one of the screw holes and the clip thing sawed off.
