X62 questions...

#1 Post by Libre_ME » Mon Sep 03, 2018 8:18 pm

I know that the X62 boards are no longer being made. Is there a possibility of even finding one of them anymore, specifically i5-gen3 ? I'd also like to know if anyone has tried to, or succeeded, at porting these to Coreboot, like the guy with the X210.

They are still floating around. There is supposed to be another update version coming this year (perhaps a x63).

Also, I saw a weird hack where someone put a X210 board into a X61. They had to cut out the lefft side and replace that part with a bezel from a x201, but other then that, it i a X61 with a X210 motherboard. Sounds like the dream machine

How much is a bare X62 board (with heatsink) these days? Recently got a dead X60 from a cousin, its system board had some burnt components between the top of the WLAN slot and the HDD bay. :o
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
RIP: X220 4291-C91 X61 7676-A24 760XD-U9E

Probably more then you should spend. You can contact Jacky through ebay -- seems to be the only way to get a response. Jacky doesn't seem to respond via email.

The X62 board, bare or not, is 90% of the cost of a full X62 machine. At this point, most boards in circulation will have made it to machines already. Furthermore, I think the cost to obtain a full X62 machine has probably exceeded it's true worth, since most people with them wouldn't be willing to part with them, though I can't speak for everyone. I can't image using an X62 on a stock 1024x768 either, as the low resolution would take away all appeal that I would have for otherwise modern specs.

There was a 5th production run in Dec 2018, so there is a fresh supply of boards circulating around. Jacky is actively selling boards and systems. But I would suggest at this point holding off on buying a X62 board since a X63 was supposedly being released within the first 6 months of 2019.

Is there a link to this project?

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Wow they LITERALLY stitched an X61 and X201 body together, wow.

The X63 is basically an X62 with an extra M.2 slot. It supports PCI but not the SATA lanes.

They've also merged the sound card with the main board.

May I ask if anyone knows the disadvantages of the X62 i7 mainboards according to Hope?
Or comment on their X62 i7 experience?

I read on another forum (Reddit?) of a person being in Shenzhen and meeting Hope in person.
He mentioned that Hope recommended the i5 boards over the i7 boards.
I cannot locate the post at the moment.

The post on Lcdfans facebook page concerning the 5th batch of X62 mainboards mention only the i5-5200DU. I wonder if there is a reason why.
I've heard that the i7's are available but it's unclear to me if they are from a previous batch or the latest 5th batch.

I have no issues with my X62 i7. As far as I know, they only ever used engineering samples for the i7. Maybe something to do with cost. I know the same "engineering sample" i7 chip has been increasing in price between each production batch for the board released.

Apparently Jacky has stitched together spare OEM X201 boards into X61 units using the same method. I guess it slightly modernizes the X62, and I guess Jacky has an abundance of X201 boards around after replacing those units with X210 boards. So I guess the displays work between the models.

i7 does run pretty hot and throttles.. The i5 might actually perform better because of this. Its the better choice, but i could never compromise like that.. Its gotta be the top spec -__- (even if its actually worse lol)
