Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
Are the sources of EC firmware and BIOS going to be available?
51nb X210 with community EC mod, me_cleaner and recelled 99W*h battery; X230 with coreboot, me_cleaner and nitrocaster's FHD mod as a backup; R500 for guests; T60 just for the looks.

What is the price? Can you describe more what you mean when you say the upper body is upgraded without modification?
Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
Meaning anyone being able to download, recompile and modify them to their needs.

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
Please do know I'm not involved with the project
I just found a message mentioning the Thinkpad T700 and than I started my hunt for more information
Regarding the upper body as I understand that no modifications need to be done to the screen
But I asked that question + some other ones as well
I am also waiting on the price
But I don't expect it to be cheap since it's only a batch of 100
Asap as I have our missing info I'll update all

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
There will be updates available for owners as in all (51nb & private) previous projects
If it will be handed out to non-owners I really have no answer to that question
But me personally don't see any issues with it
Now me is not the people running the project
I'll ask it anyway and see what comes back and post it here
Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
The question is not about updates, it's about the source code. 51nb's firmware turned out to be quite buggy, and they didn't provide any assistance with fixing that, keeping the source code to themselves, and leaving their customers to disassemble the binaries to attempt fixing their stuff.Kingair wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 2:06 pmThere will be updates available for owners as in all (51nb & private) previous projects

I would be interested in backing it provided the EC firmware is open-source, or sourced from a known provider, and that the price is reasonable.

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
I have an X62 and T70 from 51nb, and by far the biggest drawback is not being able to control my fans with any kind of software (besides some powershell script for X62 that doesn't work very well). Speedfan, HWINFO, etc. are unable to pick up on any sensors to control the fans myself, so I have to rely on various EC from 51nb's HOPE. Unfortunately for X62 the only options were an EC with the fan always on, but runs cool, or an EC with the fans just about never on, and a bunch of heat. T70 is stuck with the over-active fan.
This is a word of warning to anyone that goes in on this: only buy if you're confident that whatever team or person is running it will provide some kind of reasonable support.

These projects are totally not comparable like buying a brand new Thinkpadfatpolomanjr wrote: ↑Thu Jul 16, 2020 7:54 pmThis is a word of warning to anyone that goes in on this: only buy if you're confident that whatever team or person is running it will provide some kind of reasonable support.
Here you are depending on the progress of the project
And a new upgrade can be 2 steps backwards
Certainly don't compare this to average thinkering with Thinkpad

Why exactly not T61/p? The 4:3 variants share a motherboard layout with the T60/p 15" and 14" 4:3 machines. Im not seeing why the board wouldnt work in them.

Re BIOS/EC: I wouldn't be surprised if 51nb have been mixing/matching pieces of Lenovo software in binary and so don't have full sources themselves. I still wish they made all the bits and pieces they used available.. In the worst case it could have been a one-off job by a friendly hacker from which all traces are lost ...and then again there are legal issues even in China. There are courts and threatening letters written by lawyers, I heard they received some from Lenovo. So it may be not that simple. Yet I wish they found a way to throw those bits over the fence somehow.. via anonymous file upload websites etc.
Re trust.. In a project like this trust is a big thing. X2100 mobos costed $600-700 if I remember correctly, that's a considerable amount of money to trust somebody with. 51nb have a reputation tied to their website I guess. xytech/xueyao has a reputation linked to his account on reddit, and probably to a lesser extent to his account here and website/facebook page.
On the flip side of the coin I understand there is at least one reputable private maker, think he was going by the name of KKK, who has done a lot of good work but eventually became unable to deliver all hardware he took money for. Last I heard there were people who lost their money. As a side-note I'm a little afraid of what may happen if xytech's account on Reddit gets hacked/hijacked..

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
Regarding the EC & BIOS, source code will definitely not be provided. They wrote their own EC but given how small and limited the project is, they won't be putting in that much effort in writing good firmware. The latest X2100 firmware is imo, pretty good for most end users and fixes most of the issues present on the previous projects. There's control over the fans in the BIOS and the charging is also fully fixed. However, the firmware is mainly written for Windows users without much consideration for other OSes etc.
To put it in perspective, 51nb built these projects for mainland ThinkPad enthusiasts, with no consideration for Linux users and other types of power users. The idea is really just for those who love the classic TP design and in the process, bring profit and attention to the company. Well, they received attention, but from Lenovo instead, and that caused them to decide that it's not a good idea to continue pursuing. The profit is also too low to justify potential lawsuits when the company has other services and products too. They've announced that they're scrapping the entire custom mobo projects recently due these issues.
The T700 is a fully private build with even less support and is completely unaffiliated with 51nb. I've personally ordered a few boards to satisfy those who're interested in the project overseas and will try my best to support those who are using this.
Correct me if I'm wrong here: the EC for these boards should be prioritised in getting open sourced compared to the BIOS. If a schematic for the board could be released and bootguard is absent, coreboot could be ported over fairly easily.
Regarding getting hijacked: I take most of my orders in PayPal. Feel free to hit up PayPal or your credit card company if there's any imposters out there.
I personally have plans to fully incorporate (in China or Singapore) and release an X230 reincarnated board sometime in Q1 2021. Open source will be prioritised, but in the event that it's not feasible, there'll be a proper platform (github etc) for bug reports etc to keep the firmware updated. I do forsee a few issues, mainly legal in terms of advertising. If there are any lawyers/experts on legality of these types of products, please hmu on how I could get around this issue.

I assume that "new" X230 mobo will have:
- nitrocaster's FHD-mod integrated (allowing for eDP HD/FHD screens)
- EC battery check removed
- EC modded for xx20 keyboards
- 1vyrain applied

Not to hijack this thread so this'll be the last reply on this. I'm looking into a few options: 13.4" 16:10 4K XPS 13 panel, 13" 3K panel and stock 12.5" sized 4K panel. The 13.3"/12.5" FHD panels will also be supported for legacy support to reuse X330 parts. The top halves will be reworked and redesigned (CNC Al) to support the thin bezels better on the larger panels.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 12:46 amI assume that "new" X230 mobo will have:

The 'stock' BIOS will not be locked at all (1vyrain basically). I'm looking into getting the EC open sourced and provide schematics for coreboot porting. I'll be donating a few boards/machines to the devs for coreboot efforts that's for sure.
Anyways, it's still something in the works hahaha.
Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
Hi there! You saying it is a legit project at least adds some level of trust to this otherwise completely mysterious and unknown initiative.. How much are people paying to get the boards btw?
I would have thought that in these small-scale projects opening the sources is in everybody's interest. I would go so far as to argue that if there are legal reasons such code cannot go to github or such it should be at least be offered via anonymous file sharing servers and/or supplied with each machine. Any idea who's behind this T700 project? Are they installing the docking connectors? T700 sounds like a name for a Terminator I'm re-building one T60 and one R60 this year both 4:3 15" so naturally I have some interest in modern mobos for them.. but on the other hand with this X2100 on order and all other bits and pieces it seems like I may be getting out of my hobby budget already..
My point was: I've read on reddit a number of times different people saying good things about your work - and no bad things - so I'd decided to trust you with money for one X2100. However if your reddit account was hijacked the bad guys could have easily conned me out of my money. Paypal offers protection - but isn't that time-limited? The projects are naturally slow and by the time I realize I'd been scammed, possibly 1.5 - 2 years later I don't think either Paypal or credit card company (my bank) will help me. In fact I'm not entirely sure my bank will help me with Paypal scam at all.. even though I am in fact paying via a credit card. There are dangers in these projects and I don't know how to mitigate them.
I suppose using a fully-incorporated company does serve this purpose.. if the legal issues can be overcome..
God speed! As noted earlier I still think it might be a good idea to provide soldering pads for the docking connector on your motherboards if that doesn't significantly impact your legal position.
Another random idea: I'm wondering if a single mobo could serve both tablet and non-tablet versions. I honestly don't know how this might impact the demand. I was just trying to imagine if I was interested in an upgraded X220t even if it only had the original touchscreen.. Hmm..
I imagine if this all worked out another round on T60/R60 form-factor wouldn't be out of the question in a few years time?

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
Funny that xytech replied here, as I was going to mention how much I appreciate his transparency on the X2100 custom project and other mods. The transparency here for the T700 is severely lacking, at least publicly. I'd be much more inclined to support the T700 if as many details as possible were provided upfront, which is the standard for many group buys, like with mechanical keyboards, custom keysets, and 51nb boards. I tried checking it out in the Facebook group and reddit, and there's still so very few details. I'm 100% with atagunov here on the issue of trust.
It seems you're posting updates as the project moves along. Maybe my issue is just with the order of development and taking reservations; reserved spots shouldn't start until the details are already set. The project seems to be in the Interest Check phase, yet the project runner is asking for commitment as if it's already in the Group Buy phase.

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
It's a super long story behind why the sources aren't shared but in short, it's all financial: they can reuse the EC for other projects or even sell it instead of sharing it freely. Open source is a beautiful walled garden but outside of this garden, there's plenty of reason why companies/individuals aren't willing to share code.I would have thought that in these small-scale projects opening the sources is in everybody's interest. I would go so far as to argue that if there are legal reasons such code cannot go to github or such it should be at least offered via anonymous file sharing services and/or supplied with each machine. Obviously there's no absolute way to 100% trust some guys on the Internet selling you things, especially if it's from another continent. Hopefully my continued presence here & on the internet will help alleviate some trust issues. I'm also planning to incorporate and to launch the next projects on kickstarter/indiegogo to increase trust. I've also had people who request for a refund and a new invoice for PayPal to extend the 180 days protection. My point was: I've read on reddit a number of times different people saying good things about your work - and no bad things - so I'd decided to trust you with money for one X2100. The docking port will probably never be replicated for one reason: TB3 is the future. It's not proprietary and does not involve effort to be invested into designing the docking port. Some of the docks are also not that great (blocking vents etc). The legal issue I'm talking about is how to advertise/put this up online without infringing the copyright of Lenovo. This is what caused 51nb to stop these projects and hopefully I can find ways to skirt around this issue.God speed! As noted earlier I still think it might be a good idea to provide soldering pads for the docking connector on your motherboards if that doesn't significantly impact your legal position.
It really is a private project and the project builder is not interested in serving the interests of foreign customers. I personally don't plan to push this project too much as it's a fully private project with no support from 51nb. If you're a hardcore fan of the T60 series, feel free to DM me or the OP on this (Not an endorsement or anything, just a comment).Funny that xytech replied here, as I was going to mention how much I appreciate his transparency on the X2100 custom project and other mods.
Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project
I really wish you success in offering motherboards with an open-source upgradable EC firmware. It will be word-first I guess. A cut above LibreBoot. In my view this will result in a product more useful to buyers with longer useful life and more opportunity to repair it. A better overall product too as more hackers will be able to pool their efforts. Perhaps we can invite Richard Stallman to buy one, think he's keen on such things
BTW you could try talking to FSF, they have some lawyers too. FSF is re-selling some Thinkpads with Libreboot under their own brand as entirely free machines. Perhaps your hardware could earn their seal of approval too. Don't know..
And because there is a miniscule small hope that after X220 XueYao boards there may come T60 XueYao ones I will feel a little more happy with my already taken decision not to jump on T700 bandwagon in 2020. So much more so if they're not willing to deal with foreign customers and disclose the code they write.
You're running this show, mate. I'm in a position to ask but not to demand. That said I remain convinced 4337 are great docks and vent blocking issue can be solved/is not that bad to start with. Power supply, power on/off, two display ports lines, USB. This is a very neat and super-useful package. I actually also use Ethernet via the dock and sound out, though sound is less crucial. Having to give up 4337 docking will make X220 a lesser machine even while the processor upgrade makes it a bigger one. In my view.
You mentioned previously that providing docking connectors on the boards from get-go can get you in hot waters with Lenovo. Therefore I suggested a smaller thing - testing it works and selling the motherboards without actual connectors - but ready for them to be soldered on.
P.S. X220/230 are notorious for their super-loud fans. Would be nice to find a solution for this too.

Update Aug 5 2020 CST:
1. Keyboard connector will be moved 2mm to the right, which will be compatible with wide-screen machines (15.4'')
2. The original T60 fan will be compatible with the CPU.
*Unofficial, just an ad* I've grabbed 5 boards, all already paid in RMB. After I received the boards I'll be assembling some machines, those who are interested in can PM me, and I can reserve you one. Doing this small business to get me some extra money to use in college haha.

How are you ensuring that the coolers (which are known for not having the tightest tolerances in manufacturing and are now almost a decade old) wont crack CPU dies? This was an issue that was had with original motherboards when these machines were new, I can imagine it may be an issue with a new board thats being retrofitted to the old chassis and cooler.

That's what HOPE from 51nb says, I'm just paraphrasing into English.

Yeah but since I'm not affiliated with 51nb and I'm also not involved in the board making process I can't give you a statement about this
