P50 Not Turning On

#1 Post by richramo » Tue Oct 12, 2021 7:36 am

I picked up a P50 on eBay but without a charger or battery. (the photos suggested that booted to the Lenovo Logo)
I have a few other Thinkpads laying around the house with 90W chargers, so I tried to power up the P50 using one.

When I turn it on, a few lights flicker on the keyboard, but unfortunately, it doesn't power up.

I am trying to figure out if it won't power up because I'm not using the original 170W charger and a battery installed? Or if it should at least power on with the 90W charger, there could be another problem.

I am trying o diagnose whether it isn't working due to the lack of power before I Invest money into restoring it, or if whether, in theory it should work, or if anyone else has been able to power up their P50 from a 90W charger without the battery installed, as I am concern it could be a motherboard issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

According to the P50 frubom/parts list and the PSREF, only a 170w PSU is listed, so that may well be your problem.

I think RBS maybe on to something.

Hopefully you can borrow a 170w adapter to try. If you were closer I could send you one to try.

It wouldn't surprise me to know it won't boot on a power supply with 80 watts less that what it requires. Startup requires more power than just having it sitting at idle.

Thanks for your help all. Found a friend who has a W541 and I was able to borrow their 170W charger. The P50 works like a dream. Crisis adverted. I would have been very disappointed if it was a motherboard problem.
