P52 P3200 running hot

#1 Post by TPHenrique » Thu Sep 12, 2024 5:40 am

Hello everyone! This is the first time I'm on this forum and on any forum.

I have a P52, which I'm quite happy with, but a little worried in terms of temperatures. The CPU (8850H) I've managed to undervolt with Throttlestop by -0.125V (it probably could go further, but I haven't bothered to spend the time on) and to a turbo of 46/46/40/40/36/36. Temps are between 70 and 80C, which is alright. What worries me more is the GPU (P3200) which reaches temps of 80C+. I guess it's within the 85C limit, but I find it too high. Strangely it only reaches these temps while e.g. playing (Valheim) at around 50% usage, while with FurMark at 100% it only goes up to around 75C. I've already changed the thermal paste, which seems to have made a difference on the CPU, but not the GPU. It's possible I didn't do a proper job, this is not the first time I've changed the thermal paste on a laptop, but still. I have the following two questions:

1. Are these GPU temps normal for the P52 with the P3200?

2. Is there a way to underclock/undervolt the GPU?

I've been looking into this for some days and managed with the nvidia driver 529.19 to reduce the power limit from 70W to 46W through nvidia-smi -pl 46. At 45W and below it enters into P5 power state and drastically reduces gpu and more importantly memory clocks to an unusable level. But even at 46W the GPU still runs too hot, maybe 3C lower. Since then it updated itself to the newest driver (538.78), which removed the ability to change the power limit. All other useful settings in nvidia-smi, to change clock speeds or set a lower temp limit, are also locked out by the nvidia driver.

I hope this isn't a repost and someone has some more insight. Thank you for your help.

Btw, is there a tutorial on how to get TPfancontrol to work on the P52?

Welcome to the Forum.

Instead of paste, consider Honeywell PTM7950 thermal pads.

No idea about nVidia drivers.

For TPFancontrol, look at https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=27

Thank you for the fast reply RealBlackStuff! Do you have any recomendations on where to get PTM7950? I watched the Linus Tech Tips video about it, which mentioned MODDIY and Ebuy7 and there being a difference in quality and performance.

Those temps sound fine to me.

Just applied the PTM7950. Temps seemed to have come down a little, looking at what I posted originally. The GPU now sits at 79C, which I found a little underwhelming, but I noticed it seems to bit boosting higher, from 1300MHz to 1500MHz, so the PTM7950 must have made a noticeable difference after all. 80C seems to be some sort of temp limit for the P3200 to throttle.
I would still like to have some way to limit the clockspeeds myself, but that doesn't seem to be possible, at least not easily.
Thanks for the help and suggestion!
