Have new P51 arriving Tuesday.

#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Sun Aug 20, 2017 3:33 pm

I have been on the dark side and using Apple laptops with Wondows via BootCamp. But the lack of ports have pushed my back into Lenovo's hardware. My P51 has the Xeon processor, 32gb, 512ssd. I elected not to get the 4K screen and went with the HD. 4K screen do not play well with some of my legacy software.

Into digital photography, AutoCad and deep sea fish in the Luhrs off the cost of Jacksonville.

Hoping I am still welcome after all these years, you people have always helped me when I need it.

Speaking of help, is there anything I need to know about my P51? Hope it is not bad news.

Good to be back, can't wait till Tuesday!!!

Nope, just a lack of indicator lights. Once a Thinkpadder is always a Thinkpadder. I had to use a Mac this summer but my Trusty X220/230 will always beat my 2013 MBA anyway, and you should feel great to get back into good keyboards, more ports, and of course, the little nub we all know and love! Personally, I would have got the 4K screen and dropped the res down to 1080p. Being exactly .25x size , it should have looked seamless and played happy with your legacy programs, but that is your decision. Also, be prepared for not having your CPU thermal throttle all the time because the fan grill is covered by the LCD hinge :D !
Welcome to the jungle, we have FrankenPads
If you want it you're going to bleed, but that is the price to pay
And you're a very rare mobo, very hard to get
You can see the blinky lights, but you won't get them for free.

Wow, a P51, congrads!

1. We came also used other brands previously, and now we exclusively use ThinkPad (and ThinkCentre) products!
Do enjoy your stay around; our users on this Forum is quite helpful to each other!

2. There was a comment on P50 here:

If you like Thinkpads then you should like your P51. I ordered a P51s and P51 and prefer the P51 even with the weight penalty. The only advantage the P51s has over the P51 is weight and slightly smaller size. As I am coming from a T60p that server me for 10 years until the fan died (looking for a new fan and keyboard) I am very happy with the P51. I think this is one of the few current Thinkpad models that is built as well as the original IBM models. The P51s is very nice for an Ultrabook but still feels flimsy when compared to the P51 and the P51s 4K screen is not near as nice as the 4K on the P51. I was not expecting this as I assumed they used the same panel, they don't. Keyboard layouts are subtly different as well, weird.

P51 i7-7820HQ : 512Gb m.2 RAID 1 : 4K IPS
P51s i7-7600U : 512GbGb 960Pro : 4K IPS
T470p i7-7820 : 512Gb 960Pro : WQHD IPS(considering)
T60p 8741-C3U T7600 : 100Gb : 15.4 WSXGA+ (retired)
T43p 2687-M8U P-M 760 : 100Gb : 15 IPS UXGA (retired)
Z60m 2531-MTU P-M 760 : 100Gb : 15.4 WSXGA+(retired)

What do you mean no indicator lights. There is a hard drive light and power light!

No need for the 4K for me and the HD screen does great with the software I use. My P51 is freaking awesome. Been through a lot of laptops and never have I been able to do the updates and install all my software so quickly. Not sure if it is the Xeon processor or the 32gb ram. No matter it does some fine 3D AutoCad with very smooth rotations even on some of my larger drawings.

The P51 keyboard is as I remember and nice to have a numeric pad again. So many ports. USB3 ports galore. I could not be more happy. The size and weight for me makes little difference. Having a 15"+ screen and a proper keyboard is what I wanted. The HD screen is more than nice for my requirements. So far have only faintly heard the fan when installing software.

This is a workhorse for sure. Windows 10 Pro is really nice, if I can only get used to Edge. The p51 is a nice piece of hardware.

Weight make little difference to me. Not carrying through airports. Arrive at the customer and spend the day there. 2nd power supply arrived today so one can stay at the house all the time. The 15"+ screen and full size keyboard is what is most important to me. The P51 actually reminds me of the Thinkpads that I loved. The keyboard is fantastic and precise.

Did all the updates and loaded all my software and the fan hardly made a noise. The P51 loves AutoCad. My accelerator tablet works great and not a single glitch. Might as well have been using a desktop as the P51 took all I threw at it and not a single complaint.

I like!
