P51 using the battery when shut down?

#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Sat Jan 06, 2018 3:56 pm

I did not use my P51 for 2 months and when pulled from the desk and plugged in, it’s battery was dead. Puzzled I charged it up to 100% and put in back in the desk last week. This week, one week later, I pull out the laptop and it is down to 80%! Where did the 20% go while it was shut down. The laptop has not been doing this from when I purchased, it seems like it started later like a few months ago. I have pulled it out and started it with 98% power remaining after two to three weeks in the past so something has changed.

What setting could have changed in an update that would cause this. I was thinking maybe the USB is still powered up when my laptop is off, do not know what else it could be and am hoping for experts, here, helping me out.

Happy New Year people, thanks if you can help.

Try disabling network devices (wired or wireless) one at a time and see if the problem continues.

Also run powercfg -devicequery wake_armed from command prompt and see which devices are allowed to wake the system.

OK, figured out what was going on and posting here Incase anyone else has this problem.

My laptop was losing like 20% power each week when shut off. It turned out to the the “USB always on” feature. Some how in the updates from Lenovo this got toggled to,the on position. Was not there when I bought it as it never lost more than a few percent in a couple weeks. I knew something had changed and was going though all my settings and there is was, the USB always on was on which ment even when my laptop was shut down the one USB port was powered up.

Hope it help someone else. I never turned this on so it was an update that caused this.

My P51 has been awesome!!!

OK, after doing a bit more study, I found out it was fast start for Win10. When activated it would suck power from my battery even when turned off.

Beware if you are a laptop user and fast start will drain your battery to DEAD in just three weeks. You can turn it off but need to check after every Win Update as it could be toggled back on again.

Must be a bug. Normally Windows does not arm wake-up when going down to 'fast startup'. Essentially 'fast startup' = hibernate with wake-up filters turned off (at least as far as network adapter are concerned).

Easy way out: if you disable Hibernate, you automatically also disable Fast Startup.

It's not any easier - they are on exactly the same settings page.

No matter how you do it, it needs to be done if using a laptop as in three weeks my P51 battery was dead flat with 0%. Not good on the battery for sure.

This setting was adjusted by a Windows Update months after I got my P51 because it did not always do this. I suggest checking after every update in the future.

Just a small update. Did a Windows update today and it toggled Fast Start on again. MS really want this on!

Hello,

I lose 5%~7% of battery of my P51 every day during complete shutdown. I disabled Fast Start two months ago to no avail. Any ideas?

Thank you!

Normally, fast start doesn't drain the battery when the laptop is switched off. And hibernation doesn't, either. You probably just have to disable the USB always on feature in BIOS.

Does always on USB consume battery even if there is nothing plugged in? How?

The voltage regulator providing 5V to the USB ports isn't 100% efficient. There's always some idle current.

USB-always-on was enabled; I just disabled it. Hopefully it will work. This would mean that both USB-always-on and fast start are factors of the problem.

Thank you all for your help.

Mine is doing the same. Fast start disable, timers disable and always on USB disabled still did it.

Started a case with Lenovo and they said step one is to send me a new battery. Just received today, the correct one, and will see how that goes.

Been using Thinkpads for years and years and NEVER seen a battery discharge so much when device is shut off.

I will let you know what happens.

Installed the new battery and charged it to 100%. In 24 hours it has lost 7%. So it is not the battery as this is the same amount it would lose with the original battery.

Will be calling Lenovo to see what is next. Hate to send it in?

If I send in do I need to restore back to factory erasing all my software and files?

What worries me is that they will send another unit and it will be the same or they will return mine and claim nothing is wrong. There has to be a way they can test for current being drained from the battery while the laptop is shut down.

More to this story coming.

Remove your SSD before sending or get another and recover the system and send in your P51 with that recovered drive.

Another thing you can check is whether wake on LAN/WLAN/WWAN/keyboard/fingerprint/anything is activated. In BIOS and in Windows.

I have disabled USB-always-on, Fast Start and any Wake up on xxxx option I could find in the BIOS, and it still consumes battery when shut down.

Thank you all for your help.

This will be my third Thinkpad that I will have to return. Left Apple due to their QC problems and now Thinkpads. I have owned near 20 Thinkpads and all worked without a flaw until 5-6 years ago.

Not sure where to go next. Might just keep this one and unplug the battery when done each week. Pitiful!
