Opal compatible ssd nvme disk

#1 Post by zeddi » Fri Feb 02, 2018 3:06 am

Hi mighty forum,

i'am looking for a new SSD NVMe OPAL disk for my P50 machine and have few questions:

does EVERY opal compatible disk will be working with Thinkpad P50 laptop ?
does last part of serial number on disks like MZVKW512HMJP-000L7 - last part is 000L7 (lenovo branded disks), 00000 (no brand/oem disk) may have any issue with compatibility with Thinkpad laptops ?
does every samsung disk with SM961 will be encryption capable on P50 ?

i simply do not want to spend ~500$ on a disk and end up with encryption not working

i'll be glad of any answer

Welcome to the forum. :D

I was under the impression that OPAL encryption can be activated either by their software, or by the ATA (hard drive) password. Hence, since every Thinkpad has an option to set an ATA password in the BIOS, they should all be compatible.

If I am wrong, I would like someone to correct me. :)
