P51 4k -> touch lcd swap

#1 Post by GuySmily » Fri Mar 16, 2018 11:35 pm

Does anyone have any experience with P50/P51 touch screens? Looks like the P51 assembly is ~$500 from Lenovo but not currently available. I'd like to know more about their quality and (dis)assembly.

There's only one part I see for the P51. On the left side, check the box for LCD Assemblies:

Good photos of the assemblies for P50 (check box for LCD Assemblies and click photo icons in table):

My only time seeing one of these in person was when a friend ordered a new P50 w/touch. It looked so bad he returned it. It seriously looked like someone had wrapped a white plastic bag around the screen. I thought it was defective, until we realized that they were manufactured this way... It was seriously terrible, not only in comparison to old generation ThinkPads (W520/W540) but especially compared to something new like a Surface Book, which has a bright, beautiful, colorful 3:2 screen.

Are P51 touch screens any better? I don't even want touch - I just want stylus compatibility. In my dreams, I would install the digitizer and keep the 4k LCD (assuming the digitizer is a piece of glass over the LCD?), but I can't find ANY information about this on the internet, besides people saying that the bezels/hinges/cables are incompatible.
