P72 or wait for P73 with RTX?

#1 Post by thumperer » Tue Mar 12, 2019 4:29 pm

I'm on the fence... should I get the top model P72 or wait for RTX to reach the Thinkpad workstations and be a bit more futureproof?

Does anyone know whats coming? When? Any rumors? When can we expect a P73?

P72 was announced in Aug 2018, and availability (or the lack thereof) was limited for quite a while.

So if you're going to wait for P73 announcement, it may be at least half a year away, and hard to order during initial launch.

From a 5-year time-frame (reasonable for ThinkPads), your GPU will *always* be out of date in 5 years time.
It's the CPU, max RAM, and max HDD capacity that determines your future-proof ThinkPad to a certain degree, and not your GPU.

As such, just get the fastest CPU you can get, and enjoy your P72!

Retired Thinkpads: T42 | 560 (circa 1996)
