P71 FHD to UHD Upgrade

#1 Post by unix_joe » Sun Apr 21, 2019 12:38 pm

Has anybody here upgraded a P71 FHD to UHD?

Instead of the P70/P71 Panasonic VVX17P051J00, I am looking at moving to the AUO B173ZAN01.0 panel from the P72.

Would I use the 01YU259 / 01YU260 40 pin cable from the P72, or 01HY731 / 01HY732 from the P71?

Still sourcing parts. So far I have found AOU B173ZAN01.4 which seems to be a later revision, rated at 300nits instead of 400. Does anybody have a reputable (non-eBay) supplier for panels?

Suggestions are welcome.

I just went with the Panasonic UHD panel. It was the only one that I could find listed as "Genuine, New" as opposed to being a knockoff.

The 40-pin will be from a P70.

Smooth upgrade. I set Xft.dpi to 200 and run chrome with --force-device-scale-factor=2. It's the same 40 pin cable FYI, despite different part numbers from P70->P71.

The new plastic I bought reads "P70" instead of "P71" but I don't care.

Nice display. MacBook-like font quality at 2x scaling. I lived in that world for a few years. I read a a lot of text. It's hard to go back to anything less than "Retina." My primary desktop at home is still a 5k 27" iMac.

OpenBSD doesn't recognize nvidia, so this is all Intel graphics. No lag on scrolling or watching videos with mpv.

Parts source was Notebookparts.com. I've used them in the past for a project W700.

Do you have the links for the parts you bought? I'm thinking of doing the same to my P70 (fhd too)

I just upgraded a P70 from FHD to UHD.

I imported a used-condition Panasonic VVX17P051J00 on eBay and ordered a 01HY731 cable on eBay. It turns out Lenovo still sells the 01HY731 and for a very low price, shame I didn't check them first!

I believe these laptops may use an LCD whitelist, before ordering the VVX17P051J00 I tested a different 40 pin LCD and it didn't light up at all.

The P5x does not whitelist panels, I'm not sure why the P7x would.
P1 Gen 5
P52
T25 Anniversary

Many more as well!
