Anyone successfully install a single 2-TB SSD (PCIe NVMe) into X1 Extreme (1st Generation)?
Anyone successfully install a single 2-TB SSD (PCIe NVMe) into X1 Extreme (1st Generation)?
Just curious, did anyone successfully install a single 2-TB SSD (PCIe NVMe) into X1 Extreme (1st Generation)?
What brand of 2-TB SSD did you use?
(X1 Extreme 1st Generation was officially listed as supporting maximum 1-TB SSD PCIe NVMe for each of its SSD slot,
whereas the P1 (1st Gen) was officially listed as supporting 2-TB SSD PCIe NVMe for each of its SSD slot.)

Though Lenovo originally posted that the X1EG1 accepts up to a 1Tb m.2 NMVE, the X1EG1 does accept a 2Tb m.2 NVME card.
I installed the Inland Premium 2Tb m.2 2280 NVMe SSD into my X1EG1's secondary m.2 slot. The laptop includes a Samsung 512Gb m.2 NVME SSD in the primary slot. Now I have a good 2Tb storage drive while the original drive contains only the OS and other software.
Inland is MicroCenter's private label brand and the card is made by Phison and Toshiba, 2 reputable companies in the chip industry.
Lots of very good reviews on the Inland card and relatively more affordable than the name branded cards. You don't get the 'brand name' but you also don't pay for it either. The chip performs well.
For the majority of PC users, Not gamers, the Inland card performs well enough that it can be used as a primary drive or a secondary storage drive.
Haven't bought or tested the drive but based on lots of reviews, the only other similarly priced card is the Intel 660p m.2 NVME card which has decent reviews but the performance reported was just acceptable and meant more for a storage drive.

Wow, many thanks for confirming that X1E1 (X1 Extreme Gen 1) does indeed accept 2 TB PCIe NVMe "2280" SSD!
Merry Christmas to you all!

Lenovo's maximums are usually lies. That is likely the case if these larger drives are working fine.
A 4 tb M.2 NVME samsung drive was plug and play with my P53 when lenovo says up to 2 tb per drive.

Not so much lies, rather it shows that they are a bunch of lazy sods, who never update their publications (like HMM manuals and specs).
Usually it's the max. RAM that was available when their machine was first launched.
But lately their QC is also slipping badly.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

As I understand it, the "maximum" SSD/HDD capacity as stated by ThinkPad/Lenovo is the maximum specs that they will officially supply/manufacture.
This entails testing by them.
ie: Once after-market SSD/HDD with larger capacities come out, ThinkPad/Lenovo would never update their "maximum",
since updating their stated "maximum" would entail more testing and budget to do this.
For example, our T410 could use 1TB 2.5" SSD (Samsung 850 Pro), something that ThinkPad/Lenovo never stated it could do!
