1. Pleased to confirm successful BIOS+firmware updates for X1E1 (X1 Extreme 1st Gen) & Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Docking Station for Workstation (40AN0230UK).
Step #1, then reboot
Our X1E1 (X1 Extreme 1st Gen) is now on BIOS v1.23 and running Win 10 (64-bit), upgrading straight from BIOS v1.13 (what it came with upon purchase).
Step #2, then reboot
Our ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Docking Station for Workstation (40AN0230UK) is now on firmware v3.1.53 (the latest according to Lenovo Vantage for our X1E1).
2. It's *highly* recommended from Lenovo forums that when using Lenovo Vantage, that you upgrade Step #1 (X1E1 BIOS) first, then reboot.
*****Upon 2nd Lenovo Vantage scan of your computer (after your ThinkPad BIOS update), you then do Step #2 (docking station firmware update), then reboot.
ie: Do not select the default option as provided by Lenovo Vantage, asking you to approve both ThinkPad BIOS and Docking Station firmware updates all in one single step.
A few months ago, this was one of the alleged reasons for the BIOS/firmware upgrading issues!

[Edit]: We've posted this thread in this P1/Workstation sub-forum because X1 Extreme is basically a P1 with a consumer friendly GPU. And all of them use the same 230W Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Docking Station for Workstation (40AN0230UK).
