P53 quality issues, disappearing UHD IPS panel

#1 Post by H-Atkinson » Sun Oct 20, 2019 1:25 pm

So, my P53 finally got here, and its got some issues.

I opted for the IPS UHD panel due to some rather awful experiences with OLED on phones in the past, and didn't want to have the possibility of seeing burn-in on a rather expensive workstation with a few months of use.

Upon arrival, I immediately noticed that the laptop wouldn't sit flat on my table. This was a common issue, and people had said this could work itself out with some use, so I figured it was no big deal. I then got the laptop through setup (windows 10 setup has that blue background color) and I had a stuck pixel on that color. The pixel seems to be able to do 3 things: be black, be blue (perfect match to the windows 10 setup color), or be white. Needless to say, this was disappointing. After contacting lenovo and posting on their forums yesterday, the IPS UHD screen option has disappeared, leading me to believe this isn't an isolated issue.

They have told me that they will likely provide a replacement unit, but I'll have to call the support center tomorrow, as the people at the 24/7 line cant deal with this issue. This experience is just reminding me why the last time I bought new from lenovo was my reliability disaster of a T61p.

Yikes! I am continually surprised what people will accept as "normal" for a $2k laptop. Where do you hear this was "normal".
I wouldn't accept a $200 netbook that was twisted so much that it wouldn't sit flat out of the box.

Don't forget to update your Thunderbolt firmware and driver when you get your replacement.

What I meant by "normal" was that it was a commonly reported thing. My P51 had not been handling GPU-heavy work well, so I needed the P53 fast. I wouldnt have sent it back solely on that, due not to its acceptability, but time constraints. I ended up doing it anyways because of the screen. The screen on my replacement unit is starting to fail. Really disappointed in these newer machines.

Time to face reality and get a desktop instead.

Im thinking that may be my best option, but its just disappointing as it had never come to that before, and in this age of desktop-replacement grade mobile workstations, for some reason Lenovo's quality has crashed so hard that they cant build a decent mobile workstation.

Its really disappointing, but since I've got warranty, Ill send it in (again) and hopefully they fix it.

OT, but the OLED banding on the P53 (with the touch OLED) is getting worse, I'm just noticing it more, or both. Either way, I'm starting to think maybe I should RMA it.
