P70 Hdd Failing / Repace with an SSD

#1 Post by ts1971 » Tue Apr 28, 2020 3:39 pm

Hi,

I have a three year old P70 on which I've been running Ubuntu Linux for a couple of years. Pursuant to a recent Ubuntu update, I'm getting errors at startup indicating that my SSD is 'likely to fail soon.' I have no idea how accurate those diagnostics are, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've never replaced a drive before, but having watched a few videos, it seems pretty straight forward. I'm having less luck trying to figure out which drive to buy. I'm seeing prices for a TB running anywhere between $160 and $350 dollars and I have no idea what the differences are. There are a bunch of what seem to me to be reasonably priced options at newegg. This https://www.newegg.com/p/1Z4-00SG-00102 ... -_-Product one for example is $170 for a 1TB. But I don't see where it even lists the manufacturer. Should I stay away from something like that? Any general thoughts or advice on either sellers or models would be greatly appreciated and I'm a bit overwhelmed by all of the choices at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

Okay, so not 15 seconds after posting that, I realized that the manufacturer is clearly Ademco, lol. I'd still appreciate any general advice though!

Any 2.5" SATA SSD would work fine. I'd suggest Samsung, Crucial, WD Blue SSDs.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Okay, as I'm learning more about this, I have a couple of additional questions. It appears as though the drive that the machine has now - SD8TN8U256G1001 - is actually an M2 PCI Express rather than the 2.5 inch SATA drive. Also, it looks like the machine has slots for either size. Is that right or am I misunderstanding something? And if it is right, is there any reason to choose one over the other? The prices seem similar on a capacity basis.

Thanks again!

If that's the case, then you can use NVMe SSDs like the Samsung 960 Evo or the WD SN750. There are lots more, but I've yet to own a computer with NVMe support so I haven't done extensive research.

I'm using the Corsair Force MP510 in my primary desktop. It is in a good spot in terms of performance and was a good bang-for-the-buck when I bought it. It must have been superseded by something else, since I find few of them available.
