Display Issue

#1 Post by Renz » Wed Nov 04, 2020 4:46 am

Hi there,

This is a report as my last post didn't gather any replies perhaps to confusing title.

My P50 screen is showing some dark gradient on the surround of the display area, it seems to be a hardware fault as it appears when a slight pressure is applied at the back of the screen and think that it might be coming from a controller card at the back of the screen.

It started by doing it just sometimes, however now it's more often so I'm concerned that I have to do something about it.

It returns to normal when I close the screen and reopen

Would a replacement of just the screen would fix that?

No experience here but thinking logically what can it be?.. It surely looks like an issue with backlight. Backlight - both CCFL and LED is an integral part of the screen panel. If the "inverter" was bad (I think an "inverter" is a more common name for what you're referring to as a 'controller at the back of the screen'; on CCFL it is actually an inverter yielding higher voltage to power up the gas discharge tube) I would have expected backlight as a whole to have an issue.. To me - without any experience with these screens whatsoever - it surely seems that a display panel replacement should fix this..

Why not open the lid first and check that the cables are properly connected and/or if anything else is 'hanging loose'?

Hanging loose? Inside a Thinkpad?

I will take a look

Back light issue sounds very possible

Yep, good advice. Hope you're aware of the magic HMM doc for your model, you'll be best advised to follow instructions on assembly/disassembly there. Though not to the last letter, you don't actually have to always use new screws :)
