P53 w/newer BIOS cannot update S/N

#1 Post by Brad » Sun Mar 07, 2021 10:31 pm

Hello all,

Recently installed a Xeon RTX5000 system board in a P53.

The BIOS is from January 2021.

Attempting to update the S/N and UUID. Updating fails using the latest version of the HMD that I have which is 1.89.

System will not boot from the HMD USB that I have used many times before.

Just get a blinking cursor in upper left corner.

Created a new USB of the same version and now it appears to get further along with a divide overflow error.

Same USB works on other ThinkPads and other P53's with earlier BIOS's.

Tried many BIOS settings with UEFI and Legacy BIOS's.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

There is a newer version 1.90.
And an odd-ball EFI-HMD.
One of those is bound to work.
Both have an USB-format program included.
For anything else try the good old Irish Rufus.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the reply.

The 1.90 offers up the same cursor in left corner and the odd ball reports invalid system disk.

Thanks again

Have you taken out all HDD/SSD drives?
Selected USB via F12 at boot?

Thanks for the reply.

Didn't remove the SSD but did select USB on start with F12.

A new wrinkle. Strange but true.

Now a second P53 with the same BIOS version but a different GPU and CPU can boot to the USB with the existing version I have and can be updated.

Take me home with the glow of the upper left cursor flashing.

Maybe you are using an always On/Off switchable USB-port, is it ON?
Tried another USB port?
Could you have a dud mobo?

Other bootable USB's work normally in either of the two USB ports.

I thought motherboard was a maybe a dud but Windows 10 WS works normally except I cannot update or add anything Lenovo with System Update or Vantage as these program use the BIOS to determine what model and type ThinkPad you are using.

Fairly certain there is an incompatibility with this CPU and GPU (Xeon & RTX5000) motherboard with the newer BIOS and the version of HMD I was using.

Older BIOS versions of the same motherboard part number DID work with my version of the HMD as well as another P53 motherboard with an i7 CPU and a T1000 GPU and the same BIOS version. Or possibly these newer motherboard's have some different sort USB boot configuration.

Friendly Lenovo technician stopped by and added what I needed.
