Replacing SSD on a P70
Replacing SSD on a P70
Hi,
For several months I have been getting a diagnostic message when my P70 boots up telling me that my hard drive will likely fail soon. I've pushed my luck this far (my life wouldn't end if I lost the data on this machine), but I've decided that it's time to finally replace the drive. The problem is that I don't have much experience with this stuff and I don't know how to find another SSD drive that is compatible with this laptop. When I look around at drives online there are so many acronyms and variations and form factors, that it makes my head spin. When I google the P70 specs I see this: PCIe m.2 SSD. Where I guess that m.2 is the form factor. But when I look online at various stores, I don't see that exact form factor. Instead I see M.2 2230, M.2 2240, etc. Are those all compatible? If so, will they all work in my laptop? What else should I be looking for? I just don't want to buy something and then not have it fit / work.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

M.2 2280 according to notebookcheck.net's review based on the SSD that they had.

Re: Replacing SSD on a P70
P70 has 2 drive options:
the standard 2.5" SATA 3 HDD/SSD (in the middle)
and the M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD (on the left).
Best M.2 drives for your laptop are Samsung 970 EVO Plus, or 970 Pro.

Re: Replacing SSD on a P70
If you decide to buy an m.2, be sure to check your P70 if it has an m.2 caddy installed on there. Part no: 4XB0K59917. They won't fit without it, but they come with a heatsink for the hassle.
And yes you'll want a m.2 2280 size drive, NVMe 3.0 x4. Also be sure to check the SSD name when you buy them. I mistakenly bought an m.2 SATA drive this way by trying to save money.

Re: Replacing SSD on a P70
Thanks everyone; I really appreciate it. It looks like the 970 EVO Plus is the winner. At $102 for a TB it's a lot less than I thought I'd be paying.
