BIOS option "Cool and Quiet on Lap"

#1 Post by zemlin » Sun Aug 07, 2022 6:41 am

Was poking around the BIOS on my P16 and found this option for "Cool and Quiet on Lap". Looks like this option is also on some prior ThinkPads.
I'm curious, what criteria does the machine use to determine it's on a lap?
I have a docking station, so I assume when that's plugged in the machine will know it's not on my lap, but otherwise how does the machine decide if it should run quiet or full power?

Based on what I read in the manual - I'm not sure it detects anything at all. It probably just activates more aggressive throttling so that it does not get as hot, in case you use it on your lap.

That's lame. They don't elaborate on any of the BIOS options on the P16 in the available docs.

Probably a rebranding of the old Active Protection System. Wish a toggle for that existed on older models, since on the P53 it randomly activates and cuts back the power limit for the CPU to 15w until you enter S1 sleep or restart. Have to use RegEdit to disable it on the P53.

Have they published a P16 HMM yet? P1G5 still isn't up, and if it isn't out by the time mine arrives there's going to be a pretty interesting phone call taking place...
