P50 - 2tb NVME - temperature

#1 Post by sbazsi » Mon Jun 05, 2023 4:00 pm

Lenovo p50. i76820hq, 32gb, nvidia quadro m2000m 4gb, 256gb - upgraded to 2 tb ssd + 2tb hdd

Original system drive - 256 Samsung ssd M2 has been changed to Adata legend 2tb nvme ssd
(There is another 2tb hdd beside that.)
The heatsink given with the SSD cant fit into SSD caddy.

After switching on smart info shows 50+ C degree, after 10 minutes its about 50 C degree.

Should I worry about 50C degree when its in idle state?

After copying from ssd to ssd some files, in 2 minutes the temperature went up to 70C Degree.

Any idea how could I install the original Adata heatsink, or any other option for cooling?

You'll need to modify the heatsink or rather: the caddy, so that the heatsink will fit.
Without it, that SSD will soon overheat.
By the looks of it, the caddy is made of plastic, so shouldn't be too difficult.

Do you think, any of theese would be good instead?

That 4655509 makes a lot of sense, plenty room for cooling.
You could make that yourself out of a piece of wood (probably using a longer screw to make things easier).

RealBlackStuff: thank you for your advice. It took some time, to get it printed.

What do you think the original heatsink that comes with the ssd is enough?
AXAGON CLR-M2L3 Heatsink for M.2 SSD would fit in the P50.

(My concern: if I install the original, and its not enoug, how to remove it. )

If that SSD came with that cooler, I'm sure it has been tested to properly work.
I don't have anything like that, but it shouldn't be difficult to (dis)assemble that cooler to the SSD.
Just check that there is enough room for it.
If the mounting tabs fail/brake, you could probably use some cable ties/zip ties.
