Thinkpad P53 trackpad + trackpoint not working (Windows 10)

Trackpad and TrackPoint stopped working all of a sudden. Ive tried to update the drivers didn't work, checked if the ribbon cables were secure (they were), checked bios settings, booted up a live CD of Linux mint still didn't work. I've tried everything I could think of, but it still doesn't work. Have any of you guys experienced this problem?

Since it didn't correct itself with the Linux environment I'd conclude some sort of hardware problem.

I believe The trackpoint and touchpad rely on each other's presence to function properly. You could try disconnecting one or the other's cable and see if anything improves. I'm also curious if there's a BIOS test for the pointers and what it might say. Otherwise I'd load up the parts shotgun.

It's not that they rely on each other's presence, but rather that they share the same PS/2 port. This means when one of them is misbehaving, the other is affected as well.

But the troubleshooting steps needed is as you say: disconnect one either trackpoint or touchpad cable, then test.

should I start with cables first?

I seem to have a similar problem.
Just got a P53, and the keyboard had problem with some keys missing.
The trackpoint, trackpad and mouse buttons (both sets) were not working.
Replaced the keyboard (including the trackpoint and respective mouse button) with a brand new set.
All of the keyboard is functioning properly, except the trackpoint and its buttons.

- Tried disabling/enabling both trackpoint and trackpad from BIOS
- Tried disabling just the trackpoint and vice versa with the trackpad
- Tried disconnecting trackpad to check trackpoint and vice versa
And both the trackpad and the trackpoint just don't seem to work.

So now the only part I did not replace seems to be the trackpad itself.
Would you think that replacing the trackpad would solve both the trackpoint/trackpad not working (seeing that they do share the PS/2 port), or should I just accept the fact that I will need to use an external mouse with this otherwise great laptop?

Forgot to add, this is on Windows 11.
I also tried with booting to a Linux environment, but issue still remains.

hello, welcome to the forum..
not that i am up to date on much, BUT it looks like the issue is not software but either firmware on the keyboard or bios..
i would look into the replacement keyboard source.. it it a correct lenovo part or some sort of aftermarket part..
did you pull the battery when you installed the keyboard..?

That is exactly my story, point by point, but in my case with a P52s. I tried with three different keyboards, and phisically disconnect trackpad and trackpoint, but nothing worked and the problem persists.

I've replaced the motherboard now, but trackpad+trackpoint still don't work with the new motherboard. Only thing I've still not replaced is the trackpad. Something weird was that, when I started Windows with the new MB, the SO rebooted the machine and installed something before starting again (a firmware update for the new MB??), with the Lenovo logo above the "please wait while updating your system" message.

I know that P52s and P53 don't habe the same touchpad, but the problem is exactly the same. Any help would be appreciated, I've not many hopes with this P52s, and if I can't solve the problem soon I'll sell it as defective or throw it away just out of desperation. Worst reliability experience with a TP in 20 years.
