Can't Stop ThinkPad P16s Gen 2 from going into sleep mode eventually

#1 Post by mbressman » Mon May 20, 2024 12:48 am

I have a client with a ThinkPad P16s Gen 2 (21HK001HUS) running Win11 and plugged into a ThinkVision monitor - basically being used as a desktop. However, no matter what I try, I can't seem to get the laptop to stay up and running all the time (when plugged into a power source) and it keeps going into sleep mode eventually.

Here are a few things I've tried:
  • Setting power options obviously*
  • * I think because Modern Standby is enabled, the advanced power options are limited compared to laptops where Modern Standby is disabled. I've tried disabling it (which requires first going into "Windows Security -> Device Security -> Core Isolation -> Firmware Protection / Microsoft Defender System Guard" and disabling, and then editing registry to disable Modern Standby), but on reboot I believe this somehow disabled the built-in fingerprint reader from what I recall so it wasn't really an option
  • Turning off User Presence Sensing in BIOS (Security -> Intelligent Security)
  • Using MS PowerToys Awake module
  • Using Caffeine with various command-line options
    • If I just run Caffeine without any command-line options, it will keep laptop awake as long as the screen isn't locked. Once you lock the screen though, all bets are off and it will eventually go into sleep mode again
Anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

P.S. If you want to see what the power options look like for this laptop, see either of the following links (since I couldn't post or attach the image on here):

One method would be to permanently have a browser going with a radio website.
I use https://www.globalplayer.com/live/classicfm/uk/
If I want quiet, I just press the Mute button.
If I need sound from another website, I mouseclick on the speaker symbol in the radio browser-tab and activate the Mute button.
Don't forget to UNclick the tab-speaker-symbol and press Mute again when done with the other website.
Sounds more complicated than it is.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

That could work, but the end-user is not very technically savvy, and I think they will balk at having to do that each time they want sound (especially considering they expect sound to occur from the laptop throughout the day, such as when emails come in, notifications, etc. - and all of that would be potentially lost with this method). Thank you for the idea though!

Is there a website that plays "silent audio"? Or create one locally, make a simple html5 file that loads said audio and set it to autoloop, then set up the browser to open said html5 file on every new tab...?
