Interesting piece found on Lenovo's website: an overview of Linux Certifications for IBM/Lenovo hardware.

Not very useful, at least not in my case. Quite the contrary, actually, they list the Thinkpad P1 as Ubuntu 18.04 certified, but it can't even install properly from the distribution media. There are workarounds (installing 16.04 first, then upgrading), but things like the fingerprint reader or secure EFI booting still do not work.

Thanks for sharing RBS.
Interesting to see that the ThinkPad T430 is actually not on that list despite the option to ship with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as the primary OS.

And all versions of mint 17.3 to 19.1 that I've used install 'out of the box' as has been the case with every thinkpad I've got. Not useful!
T430 i7-3632QM Mint 19.0 Cinnamon, T430 Mint 19.0 Cinnamon, T420 Mint 18.3 Cinnamon, T410 dual boot win7/mint 17.3, T60 Mint 19 Mate

As it turns out, nearly all Thinkpads are quite happy to run with almost any Linux distro.
Just look at the ThinkWiki - Linux Thinkpad Wiki.
The same can not be said for other brand laptops.

Oh yes ... a lot of them works fine, mostly out of the box just FP needs to be adjusted but drivers already there ... so yeah, i would agree that almost any TP runs Linux just shame on Lenovo for not working harder or choosing wrong hardware and no Linux support for it. ( yes, you FingerPrint scanner !!! and color calibration ) .

i'm using a color calibration file from win 10 with ubuntu 16 on my t460s. system settings -> color, and add new profile or something and browse to that file on your drive. btw, have used ubuntu 12 and 14 on a t420 and t430 and 16 on my t460s. the first two dual booting with win 7. they all work as well or better with ubuntu than windows. actually the mic button that doesn't light up right on win works on ubuntu out of the box. also, amazingly every usb gizmo i've hooked up like a sound card, external m.2 drive, just worked out of the box, no need for drivers. and -- just take your installation from one computer to the other. eff bill gates!
