smbus error Ubuntu latest version on Virtual Box

I've never used Virtual Box before until recently. Never ran Ubuntu before. On installtion get an smbus error and the site above seems to provide a solution. Is this proper for Thinkpads? If so, can someone show me step by step how to actually make the suggested changes? I'm not sure how!
