Thinkpad T60 overheats on LinuxMint 11 LXDE?
Hi All,
Most of the time it runs fine, but I can consistently get my T60 (2ghz T2500, Intel 3945ABG wireless NIC, Ati X1400 graphics) to crash due to heat. If I multi-task and download a file in the background and then run a Java program, it will eventually overheat and crash (kernel panic?) in about 15-20 minutes.
The area where the Intel wireless card is beneath the armrest gets very hot and CPU area gets very hot. If I do the exact same tasks in WindowsXP, it gets warm but will chug along no problem.
Is there a kernel update or downgrade I can do or a new driver update I can install to fix this in LinuxMint? Is this common in other Linuxes as well?
Thanks,
Thomas

I have no experience with the T60/ATI x1400, but I run or have run Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 on T61, R60e and X60 and never experienced problems like you describe.
I installed the mint 11 LXDE on a R31 a few weeks ago and had no such problems with the install. I removed it because I (unlike everybody else it seems) like the original ubuntu/lubuntu/xubuntu distros a lot better than mint.
You should be able to install tpfanco from here: http://code.google.com/p/tpfanco/
and be able to control you fan/find your own settings.
If I remember right you should also have a program called "Systemmonitor" in the mint distro, open it and find out what process it is that taxes your cpu.

Looks like there is a power management bug in this kernel version. I updated the kernel according to these instructions and now the T60 runs significantly cooler.

Which kernel version were you using, and which did you upgrade to?Thomcat wrote:Looks like there is a power management bug in this kernel version. I updated the kernel according to these instructions and now the T60 runs significantly cooler.

Can I simply swap out my T5500 CPU in my 1953CTO T60 with a T5600? Or my T2400 core duo in my 2623D6U T60?
