Ubuntu 11.10 on T60 T7300

#1 Post by Beastcloud » Thu Mar 15, 2012 4:24 pm

two fold question:

I'm thinking of upgrading my T60 with a SSD Crucial m4 CT128M4SSD2 128GB.

Will there be any issues with the current release of Ubuntu?

Also any recommendations on a new cpu to replace the 2.0 ghz meron or is that fine to run Ubuntu?

I have not installed the current version of Ubuntu (version 11.10 - 32bit) on any type of hard disk/ssd as yet, but had a little play around with a live cd/dvd version a month ago on a spare T60p with a T2500 (2.0GHz) CPU & 1GB RAM - Can confirm Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG & Broadcom Bluetooth BDC2.0 card both worked ok - as did the the TouchPad and Trackpoint.

Checkout the Ubuntu 11.10 Installation guide for hardware requirements & guidance etc.

You will need to do some research to confirm Partition alignment & TRIM support for SSD's
11.10 Install on SSD?
How to enable TRIM?

Also I think you mean a T7200 and not a T7300 as in your title as this is the correct CPU for a T60 - :D

Peak,

Yes thank you, T7200 and not T7300.

Thanks for the input, I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm weighing my options. Might end up going Linux Mint....sort of begrudged by their use of a "windows like" start button, but oh-well.

I'm running 11.10 on my R60e with a Intel G2 drive. It feels like my fastest machine, booting in seven seconds. I was running Mint on it, but had some issues with it, which I can't remember right now. 11.10 has given me no trouble.

Thanks for the input Zaz. I'll have some cross-comparisons soon.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on Intel T7500, which is pretty much the same as yours and everything is working flawlessly. Just an advice if you are not used to the brand new unity interface, there's a gnome classic desktop available in the repos. Check this link if you wanna enable it :)
