T500 won't sleep

I'm not sure how else to describe it. It's this, in a nutshell: put laptop lid down and 99% of the time, you can't recover and have to power on or unplug so you can reboot.
This is not my laptop, though, so any suggestions, I have to travel to where it is and help test.
It's very odd, though. I have tried it a 'first time' and the screen returns with the log-in screen. But, try it a 2nd time and you don't get a chance to try it again. It locks up and the screen is blank with the 'sleep' ('moon') LED blinking repeatedly.
I'm hoping Linux users here will recognize what I'm talking about and have an idea of what's going on and how to solve it.
Here's more pertinent info:
BIOS - Integrated Graphics (x4500) or ATI graphics (HD Radeon 3650) or Switchable graphics
It would be great if the Switchable Graphics option could be used but I'm guessing that won't work. Also, I had the impression that one would have to use the FOSS aka open source radeon driver nowadays with the ATI hardware enabled in the BIOS. Any time the ATI hardware is enabled via the actual selection or switchable graphics, one would have to make sure the open source radeon driver is used. I think AMD/ATI stopped supporting the blob (binary) driver for this hardware line.
If anyone can help or has advice/suggestions, it would be appreciated. Also, note I'm a 'helper.' It's not my laptop. Hopefully, anything to be tried on it doesn't take long. If it is recommended that one create an xorg.conf file or something, I need also the 'solution' to fix any problem. I guess I might need a 'generic' xorg.conf file or xorg.conf.backup or something in case something is in the file that causes a problem.
EDIT: (Reason: adding OS info) Distro is Debian Wheezy. DE is Gnome3. Not sure those matter but just in case a reader is wondering....
Thanks for reading.
